MICHEAL O Muircheartaigh and local basketball star Ryan Leonard dropped by Moyderwell school gym on Friday to give their support to a schools basketball blitz for girls, run by the Community Gardaí.
Consisting mainly of sixth class pupils, schools taking part were St Brendan’s NS Fenit, Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn, Presentation Primary, CBS Primary and St Brendan’s NS Blennerville.
“We decided to run a basketball blitz for the girls as there’s not a lot of tournaments for them — it’s mostly boys tournaments,” said Community Garda, Mary Gardiner.

“It’s also a great way for them to get to know one another. Most of them will be going to secondary school next year and that can be daunting, so they might meet girls who they’ll bump into in school this year,” said Mary.
There was a cup and a plate competition run off during the morning and afternoon with Garda Aidan O’Mahony acting as a referee for many of them. The winners of the cup competition was Gaelscoil Mhic Easmainn while St Brendan’s Fenit won the plate. Scroll down for photos…
