Applications Now Open For €10,000 Council Film Bursary

THE Kerry Short Film Bursary 2022, funded by Kerry county Council and the Arts Council of Ireland, is now open for applications.

A fund of €10,000 will be awarded to the successful applicant towards the cost of producing a 10-12min short drama or documentary film in the county.

In 2022 the focus is on a strong creative connection with Kerry. At least one of each application’s core creative team (Writer/Director/Producer) must be from or living in the county.

Filmmakers will be assisted by Screen Kerry, Kerry ETB’s Film Development Office, in sourcing locations and local crew, and via Kerry College – Monavalley Campus, Tralee, a centre of excellence for film training. The deadline for receipt of applications is 5pm on Friday April 15th.

The Kerry Short Film Bursary Films have had success recently. ‘Ship of Souls’ written and directed by Jean Pasley & produced by Greg Burrowes, won the Audience Choice Award at the Foyle Film Festival, putting it on the long list for Oscar consideration.

It has also been nominated for an IFTA (Irish Film & Television Award) 2022. This film tells the story of a young Japanese widow who arrives in Kerry to mourn her husband’s tragic passing. A clash of cultures ensue as she and his family differ on how to grieve his death.

Tristan Heanue’s ‘Harvest’, the story of an aging farmer coming to terms with his declining health, has also achieved an IFTA nomination.

Shot in Tralee and produced by Ronan Cassidy, the film tells the story of a man whose recent heart attack has massive ramifications on his work and personal life, something he struggles to deal with.

Moira Murrell , CEO Kerry County Council said; “Kerry County Council funds the Kerry Short Film Bursary in order to encourage and support filmmaking in the county and is delighted to see the success these films are achieving at a national level.”

Siobhan O’Sullivan, Kerry ETB Film Development Officer reiterated that “the Kerry Short Film Bursary is an important award for those who are developing their filmmaking skills.”

An online information session on Wednesday March 16th will provide details on how to submit a competitive application.

There is a two-stage selection process in this open competition with previous winners excluded from entering. Stage one involves a shortlisting of applications while stage two requires an online interview with the shortlisted creative teams in May.
