PEIL FAOI 13: (i) Our U13 boys had their first competitive outing of the season on Wednesday 9th when an Fhoireann Dhubh took on the reigning U13 County Champions, Na Mistéalaigh, in the John Mitchel Club GAA Complex. Thanks to the John Mitchel Club for hosting what was to be a home tie for us in the Tralee Town League. Having spent the last two months working hard in our training sessions, the boys were delighted to finally get some game time. Following a positive opening few minutes for our lads, the Green’n’Gold brigade quickly got on top and took control of the half. Our outstanding cúl báire, Alex Darfoor, pulled off a number of brilliant saves to keep the goal count low; the pressure that the opposition was putting on was considerable. An scór ag leatham…JM: 3-8; AdeS: 0-0. During the half-time team talk, the boys were asked to keep their heads, minds and hearts up and to play the 2nd half like a new game. A number of substitutions and positional changes were also made. Thankfully, the 2nd half was a lot more positive for us. Following a strong start from the Ballyseedy boys, during which they kicked a number of points, our boys finally got on the scoreboard with a well-taken point from distance by David Hobbert (1-2). What followed was a positive spell for the Black’n’Amber. Our boys imposed themselves in attack with really good running-play from midfield, a fantastic opening goal by David Hobbert and a great second goal by Danny Lane (1-3). That helped us to get a foothold in the game. Eoin Mangan scored a lovely point to add to our tally. That was a wonderful period for us! Overall, it was a tough first outing for us but we’re The Rock, we’ll learn from the experience and we’ll bounce back! Ní fál go haer é! Final score…JM: 3-21; AdeS: 2-6. We might not have training this Friday (18th) due to the bank holiday. We are looking forward eagerly to our next game; boys, expect text. Training will definitely take place on Tuesday evening (5pm to 6pm) and on Sunday morning (depending on matches). (ii) Town League Division 3….JM B: 5-10; AdeS Team Amber: 4-4. Team Amber’s first game of the season was played in the John Mitchel Club grounds last Sunday afternoon (13th). Our stalwarts, agus iad ag imirt leis an ngaoth, gave a powerful 1st half performance that had us in the lead at half time; indeed, we were unlucky not to be further ahead! In the 2nd half, agus in aghaidh na gaoithe, we faced a strong response from a home team that was particularly good at long-distance point taking and that ensured that they came out on top ag an deireadh. Despite our disappointment, we knew that we had played some very good football. Beidh lá eile againn! Seán McCannon had a fine game in goal. Oisín Cotter, Ewan Canty and Diarmuid Hennessey were solid in defence. Killian Coffey, David Ahern and Conor Murphy were dynamic halfbacks. Tadhg Somers (an captaen) and Liam Swords formed an effective midfield partnership. In attack Noah Reidy, Jack Delaney, Jack Walsh, Luke O’Connor, Conor Hanafin, Séamus Keenan, Joe O’Halloran and Elliot Caljea kept the JM defence anxious and busy all afternoon and we were rewarded with some fine scores. It was an admirable showing by The Rock boys, considering that it was the first game that this group had ever played together. An Fhoireann Ómrach: Tadhg Somers (an captaen), Seán McCannon, Oisín Cotter, Ewan Canty, Killian Coffey, David Ahern, Liam Swords, Jack Walsh, Noah Reidy, Jack Delaney, Luke O’Connor, Conor Hanafin, Conor Murphy, Diamuid Hennessey, Joe O’Halloran, Séamus Keenan, Eliot Caljea. We may not have training this Friday (18th) due to the bank holiday. We are really looking forward to our next big game. Boys, expect text. Training will certainly take place on Tuesday evening (5pm to 6pm) and on Sunday morning (depending on matches). AN CLUICHE SCILIÚIL: Brave Rock hurlers came to the fore for their Gaelcholáiste school side last week! A hard-fought battle against Inbhear Scéine, An Neidín, in the first half led to disappointment in the second. A talented side guarantees, however, that there are more successful campaigns in store for Ruairí Ó Loinsigh agus a chairde in the future. No doubt they’ll spend their whole bank holiday ‘ag pucáil timpeall’ chun cleachtadh a dhéanamh! (Dáithí Ó Loinsigh, comhfhreagraí GCC).
