Ballyheigue Man Elected As Council Cathaoirleach

New Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, John Brassil.

BALLYHEIGUE man, John Brassil was elected first Cathaoirleach of the newly elected Kerry County Council this  morning.

Tralee Electoral Area’s, Pa Daly, Sam Locke and Graham Spring were just three of 14 new councillors who arrived to take their  seats in the new-look 33 seat authority at Rathass.

Two councillors were proposed for the Cathaoirleach position; Fianna Fail Cllr John Brassil and Independent Cllr Brendan Cronin. Cllr Brassil won by a vote of 25 to 8.

Cllr John Brassil, has served on Kerry County Council since 1999. He is a pharmacist and father of three who now follows in the footsteps of his father Noel who was also a Chair of the local authority.

Ballymac’s Cllr Thomas McEllistrim, who was returning to the council chambers after 11 years, was elected as Leas Cathaoirleach.
