Round 8 of The Div 2 County League

Ballymac v Castleisland Desmonds

Referee Seamus Mulvihil

In what was warm and very bright Sunday in the middle of an unusually long heat wave the heat also built up on the Desmonds home grounds as Ballymac were visitors in this 8 round of the league.

The home side applied the pressure immediately when their no 9 Kieran Brennan caught Ballymac by surprise to score a strong goal to take an early lead just 1 minute into the game. However Ballymac responded brilliantly when Vinnie Horan overcame the Desmond defence to equalize the game within 2 minutes and firmly placed the ball at the back of the net. A goal a piece just 3 minutes into the game and all to play for.

The home side battled on to score 2 further points followed by another goal from a penalty given to their side to take a firm lead in the game of 2-02 to Ballymacs 1-00. But the always determined Aiden Breen responded in outstanding fashion with his first goal of the game to keep Ballymac well and truly in the game.

Desmonds were not to be held back however when their no 14 Thomas Hickey widened the game once again by giving his side 2 further points and Ballymac followed suit to match his score with 2 points from Aiden Breen and Gene Griffen.

It was the home side that went into the break with the advantage of 3 points.

Desmonds 2-06 Ballymac 2-03

The 2nd half and a fresh start for oth sides but it was the quick thinking of Ballymacs Aiden Breen to again give his team another goal in what can only be described as powerful finishing . The sides were now level just 1 minute inot this half . But a free kick awarded to Desmonds skillfully taken by their keeper Steven Bartlet levelled the sides again. The remainder of the game proved to be a battle of the fittest with each team scoring point for point and levelled on many occasions and it was inevitable that the winners would be decided in the closing minutes. But it was Ballymac that proved to have the strength to see it through when with just 4 minutes to go including injury time that veteran player Padriag McCarthy gifted his side with 2 well placed points to ensure victory for his team.

An outstanding display of football was shown with both teams and as Ballymac take home the points on this occasion we wish Castleisland Desmonds the very best for the remainder of their league campaign.

Congratulations to the Ballymac team and management and we look forward to seeing more to come .

U16 County League

Ballymac played their second county league game in splendid sunshine on Wednesday 27th June against Fossa. This was a home fixture for  Ballymacelligott.

Ballymac started the brighter of the two teams as Adam Joy found the net in the second minute. This was quickly cancelled out by Fossa’s main scorer , their full forward Emmet O Shea. The visitors tagged on three more points before Ballymac responded. Two points from Dara Broderick and one from Dylan Dunne Moriarty left the sides level at 1.3 a piece after ten minutes. Fossa took control of the game and went on to score 2.4 before the ref blew for a water break twenty minutes in. Adam Joy kept the home side in touch with a well taken goal to leave the sides at Ballymac 2.3 to Fossa 3.7 at the water break. A goal from Dylan Dunne Moriarty, and a point a piece from Dara Broderick and Adam Joy left Ballymac’s score at 3.5 at half time. Fossa added 1.1 to their score to let six points between the teams at the short whistle.

Two points early in the second half extended Fossa’s lead .Ballymac rallied and a great point from Dylan Dunne Moriarty followed by a goal by Adam Joy reduced the deficit to four points.  Ballymac’s Daragh Leen and Fossa’s Emmet o Shea exchanged points. Fossa added another three points to let seven between teams with fifteen minutes remaining. From here on it was the ‘Ballymac show’ . The home side stood up and took the game to the visitors. U14 Central Region

Our u 14 s entertained Na Gaeil in Ballymac in Division one of the Central Region on Monday night last . Na Gaeil were fast out of the Blocks & seemed to control the game . They lead 4 Pts to 1pt after 15 mins , Ballymac having missed a few chances . However Ballymac grew into the game and with 8 mins to the interval were level 6 points each . However Na Gaeil finished stronger & lead 10 points to 6 Pts at the Break .
Na Gaeil started stronger in the second half and after scoring their first goal , they sailed into a 7 point lead . However from here to the end , Ballymac got their act together and played some effective football and took the game to Na Gaeil . Luke o Connell Donal Daly & jack Slattery all hit the net , maurice o Connell  & niall Collins added points to put Ballymac into a commanding lead . U14 Regional Feile

Our u 14 s travelled to mallow on Saturday to play in the Regional Feile competition. Our boys were up against Bishopstown of Cork St Paul’s of Laois & Glanmire of Cork . Bishopstown were our first opponents and in the sweltering heat we started well going up 4 Pts after 10 mins . We squandered some chances to go further ahead & a Goal by Bishopstown before half time had them back in the Game . Both sides played well in the second half but a fortuitous goal for Bishopstown saw them win the first game by 2 points .

In the second Game against st Paul’s , we were well in control throughout and ran out convincing winners after a comprehensive Display .

In the third Game against Glanmire , we started well and went ahead 4 Pts to 3 Pts after 8 minutes . We continued to Dominate the game up to half time & lead by 4 Pts at the interval . Our boys continued to impress in the second half getting a firm grip on the game and ran out convincing winners against a physical Glanmire Side .Bishopstown having won our group went on to play in the final against Carraigaline

U12 Diarmuid O Brien Newmarket blitz

Our U12s travelled to Newmarket last Saturday to take part in the Annual Diarmuid O Brien memorial blitz. They progressed to the final by topping their group with wins over Boherbue and Sliabh Luachra Gaels. This set up a final against Firies. Firies ran out winners gaining an early lead by scoring three goals in as many minutes. Despite this our boys didnt drop theIr heads and battled right to end being denied by the post and a man of the match display by the firies goalie. Credit to all players for reaching the final and representing Ballymac by showing great pride, passion and exemplary conduct. Thanks to Newmarket on their warm welcome and mentors Mike Sweeney and Tony Silles for taking the team on the day.

Girls under 12

Ballymac u12 girls created their own bit of history on Sunday evening last in John Mitchels when they overcame Austin Stacks to be crowned County Division One Champions thereby becoming the first girls team from the Club to win a Division One Co League title.

The opening exchanges were closely fought as both sides gave it their all to gain the upper hand and at the end of the first quarter the sides were level 0-2 apiece.

Labhaoise Mansfield when introduced performed well and was most unlucky Ballymac then hit a purple patch scoring 3-4 which included goals from Rachel Creedon Laura Sugrue and Kate Collins.Stacks hit the net on the half time whistle to leave the score at the break Ballymac 3-6 Austin Stacks 1-3.

The town side began the second half in determined fashion and a succession of points saw them narrow the gap between the sides. Some heroic defending by Alexa Weiss Anna Collins and Alice Brosnan ensured that the goals the Stacks needed didn’t materialise.A fourth Ballymac goal by Kate Collins ensured victory on a 4-10 to 1-9 scoreline.

This was a great team performance with goalkeeper Laura Kelly soundness personified throughout while Aoibheann Broderick Orla O Connor and Sinead Cassidy played their best games of the campaign in the final.

At midfield Rachel Griffin and Kate Collins ensured a plentiful supply of ball to our forwards where the movement passing and scoring of Rachel Creedon Laura Sugrue Jill Quirke and Ashlinn Baily was a joy to behold.

Joint Captains Orla O Connor and Kate Collins accepted the Cup on behalf of the team. Many thanks to all who supported the girls on the night your support is much appreciated.

Commiserations to Austin Stacks who fought to the end to try and rescue the game but unfortunately for them it was not to be.
