Ballymac Senior B football

Ballymac B 5 -09

Ardfert B 3-14

Ballymac travelled to Ardfert last Friday evening to play in the Shield Semi-Final of the Cahill Cup, with both teams fielding the bare minimum of 15 players. This encounter proved to be an entertaining game with both teams evenly matched throughout the field, Ballymac had a nervous half time lead of 4 points and this proved to be as Ballymac missed some scorable points in the second half giving Ardfert momentum to respond with some excellent points along with two late goals to ensure this contest went all the ways to the final whistle.

Two goals in the second half from Ballymac, the pick of them a cracking shot from the Robert Dowd was enough for Ballymac to hold on to the lead and earn a one-point victory which see us through to the Cahill Cup Shield Final v St Michaels Foilmore next weekend. Fantastic to see Conor Brick back in action after a few months out injured.

Eric Mason Tournament

What a day! It was so wonderful to be able to welcome clubs back and hold the Eric Mason Tournament, a day that means a lot to our club.

A special warm thank you to Erics family, Anna and Adrian Mason for allowing us to hold this day in his memory.

Congratulations and well done to Fr Casey’s of Abbeyfeale, who won the cup final and Mungret St Pauls who won the Shield.

Player of the tournament was Joey O’Connor of Fr. Casey’s.

We would like to thank all the clubs and supporters for attending, our referees, and our wonderful club members that went above and beyond on the day.

To all our parents’ thanks for helping with the refreshments and Siobhan Leen for doing the barbecue.

Thanks also to Maura Short for the amazing opening ceremony, Ciara Murphy for singing Amhrán na bhFiann before the finals and Niall Collins for handing out the medals.

Thanks to our visiting clubs Fr. Casey’s, Mungret St Pauls Churchill GAA, Keel GAA, Firies Gaa Club, Glanmire Football Club and our own wonderful Blue and the Gold team who at the last minute saved the day when a club pulled out of the competition

Blue Team

On Saturday 10th of September, the Eric Mason memorial blitz took place at the Ballymacelligott football pitch, in what only can be described as perfect conditions. Our blue team were first up against Keel with the Ballymac boys coming out on top 2-04 to 1-01.

Next up were the Limerick side from Mungret in what was a thriller, unfortunately our boys were beaten by a single point on a score line of 0-06 to 1-04.

Churchill were next up which turned out to be a must win game for us to go through to the cup semi-final. The Ballymac team put in a Stirling performance with Jack Lynch in goals making some top class saves allowing us to come out on top by 6 points.

Through to the semi-finals we took on the Glanmire side from Cork. A one-sided affair with Ballymac coming out on top 1-09 to 0-01 taking us through to the final against Abbeyfeale.

From the throw in Abbeyfeale came out with all guns blazing scoring two goals in the first minutes of the game. Trailing from the start the Ballymac side put up a heroic battle but were beaten in the end by a mere three points on a score line of 1-04 to 3-01.

Outstanding performances by all the team who ran themselves ragged, in particular Patrick Leen, Gearoid Joy, Gearoid o Connor, Adrian o Connor, Daniel Moriarty, Tadgh o Connor, Eric Quirke and Jack Lynch in goals.

Gold Team

The Eric Mason U12 Ballymac Gold team was a last-minute addition to the tournament last Saturday due to a late withdrawal of a team. This was the first time a combination of U12 boys and girls were playing together in this competition and in doing so made a little bit of history before they even kicked a ball.

Great credit has to go to these each and every one of these young club players. Evan Horgan, Diarmuid Scanlon, Blake Leen, Regan Zhang, David Fealy, Flyn Boyle, Aidan O’Connor, Gerard Mc Elligott, Grace Kelly, Fiona Mc Carthy, Alice Savage, Maeve O’Connell and Tara Slattery can hold their heads high as they showed great spirit and determination in every game.

They were up against it from the very beginning and showed how our club can pull together when the call came. They had 3 group games against Glanmire, Firies and Abbeyfeale and in the semi-final they played Mungret who eventually went on to win the Shield competition. It was a great day of football and we look forward to the tournament coming back next year.

Academy

Our Academy was called off this week due to a really bad weather forecast.

U11 Ballymac Boys

Our boys had a busy week playing a blitz last Sunday and then Castleisland District on Monday evening. We hosted Currow u11 at 7pm. We continued with our streak of determination and teamwork. The boys played a great game and the score reflected that. Ballymac 3-10 Currow 4-3. Thanks to Currow and their supporters for travelling out. Thanks also to Skye Lynch for refereeing the game and well done to our lads. Ballymac Abú.

Our next game is Saturday morning at 10.30 over in Castleisland Desmonds.

We would also like to wish the Best of Luck to our player, Shonagh Griffin, as she embarks on a new chapter of her life doing Veterinary Studies in Budapest.

U13 District Championship

St. Kierans v Tralee District.

U13 St Kieran’s district (Ballymac, Desmond’s, Currow and Brosna/Knocknagoshel) lost out to a very strong Tralee side made up of Churchill, Kerins O’Rahilly, John Mitchels, Na Gaeil and Austin Stacks.

U17’s Ladies

County Championship Division A Final V Southern Gaels in Cromane.

What a week for our Ladies Club, guaranteed a home semi-final in Junior B County Championship as Top Seeds, our U13 Ladies win their County Championship Division D and then our Mighty Mighty U17’s…

Up against the Goliath Challenge of Southern Gaels, our young ladies put in a hugely impressive performance as they took the ultimate title and finally surpassed Southern Gaels, leading from the start. A huge victory for our Ladies Club and for our U17’s Ladies on their consistent improvement over their underage careers.

This victory also ensures that a Ballymacelligott Lady will captain a Kerry Inter County team for the second year in a row.

Squad is as follows Kerry Hennessy, Alice Brosnan, Anna Collins, Ciara Kerins (C), Clodagh Coffey, Rachel Griffin, Sarah Scanlon, Roisin Rahilly (0-4), Keelin Enright, Rachel Creedon (0-2), Kate Collins (0-1), Jill Quirke (0-1), Aoibhinn Broderick, Laura Sugrue (0-4), Ella Quirke (0-3), Jamie Lee O’Connor, Emma Daly, Laura Kelly, Sarah O’Rourke, Debra O’Connor, Orla O’Connor and Ciara Palmer.

Match Report

Our Ladies learned from the Minor County Semi Final and this time we were out of the traps first going into 4 points to no score lead inside the first five minutes, with 2 Roisin Rahilly frees and a point each from Laura Sugrue and Kate Collins. A side like Southern Gaels don’t go away and they hit us with 3 points in a row to close the margin to the minimum before Laura Sugrue struck again for another to stretch the lead back out to 2.

At this stage we were down to 14 players as Jill had received a yellow card, which meant 10 minutes off the field. However, over this period we outscored SG by 2 points to 1, with our defence led by a superb half back line of Clodagh Coffey, Rachel Griffin and Sarah Scanlon, with captain fantastic Ciara Kerins, Anna Collins, Alice Brosnan and Jamie Lee O’Connor, on after 15 minutes, dominating in the full back line.

Then when Jill came back into the game, she put over 2 points in 6 minutes, with Laura raising another white flag, we went into halftime 8 points to 6 ahead.

Early in the second half, SG had a midfielder yellow carded and during this period our ladies punished the SG indiscipline by scoring 5 points without reply. Great work rate been shown by Aoibhinn Broderick to help pin in SG.

The scores coming from Laura Sugrue again, with 2 a piece from Ella Quirke and then Rachel Creedon. Champions like Southern Gaels lifted their game again and hit us for a lucky goal after a great save from Kerry Hennessy, with 2 further points to again leave just the minimum between the teams with just 10 minutes left.

But cometh the hour, cometh the heroes and with the great attacking strength in our forward line, now with the added threat of Emma Daly and Laura Kelly, SG had to continually foul us, leaving Roisin Rahilly to round off the scoring with 2 pointed frees.

Ballymacelligott winning out on a score line of 0-15 to 1-10.
