Tralee/St Brendan’s SFL Group B 2023 Round 3

Churchill 2-09 Ballymac 1-11

Snap shots of some of the positives from today: Despite the bitter cold it was a wonderful day for football. A great pitch and Facilities in in Churchill.  We had a fine squad.  Our team was led by our Captain Vinny Horan. Vinny came on in his first senior match under Manager Barry O’Shea and Gene O’Keeffe as selector ten years ago in 2013 after a very successful seven years at under age. Even at under 12 he showed his leadership skills.

Our Vice Captain for the year is Michéal Reidy who was voted the players player of the year for 2022. Michéal also played his way up through the Coiste na nÓg ranks and played with the Kerry Minor team. He made his senior debut in 2015 under Manager Stephen O’Brien. His commitment to the Ballymac Jersey is seen at every game.

Our team played well today and the scoring and defending was good. We had patches that were a learning experience. Overall, it was a good outing for the players and those loyal supporters who braved the cold to cheer them on.

Churchill put the first point on the scoreboard and failed to score for the next fifteen minutes. During this time Darragh Regan scored a goal with a point in either side from Donal Daly.

Two more points followed from Niall Collins and Vinny Horan before Churchill shook off the cobwebs and scored a goal and two points. This left one point between the teams. Vinny Horan scored two fine points before the break to leave the half time score Churchill 1-3 to Ballymac 1-06.

Vinny Horan scored the first point of the second half and this was immediately followed by a goal from Churchill.  The game continued with pointed scores from both sides. Coming up to full time it was level 1-11 to 2-08 and then just before the final whistle Churchill scored a vital point that gave them the victory.

It was a tough physical game today. We need games like that. Our back-line looked good today particularly Cian Counihan and Diarmuid Galvin catching and fielding some fine high balls. The blend of the seasoned players with the novices continues with a lot more work to do.

Ballymacelligott B v Laune Rangers B – Minor County League Div 8 – Round 1

Ballymacelligott 2-10

Laune Rangers 1-09

Our Minor team played in the first round of the county league  Division 8 against Laune Rangers in blustery conditions on Sunday. This was a historic occasion for the club as it was the first time the club fielded a second team at minor level.

Ballymac started this game slowly and after 10 minutes Ballymac trailed Laune Rangers 1-04 to 0-01.  Ballymac soon got to grips with this game and at half time the game was level ar 1-04 apiece the goal coming from Ballymac captain Alex O’Riordan in the 17th minute.

In the second half, Ballymac soon took control with some well taken scores with a wind slightly favouring Ballymac in the second half.  The crucial score came in the seventh minute of the second half with a well taken goal from Ciarán O’Connell. The game was strongly contested throughout with Ballymac running out four-point winners on a scoreline of Ballymac 2-10 Laune Rangers 1-09.

Well done to our boys for the effort and application shown.

Ciarán O’Connell (1-03), Alex O’Riordan (1-0) Jamie Burke (0-02), Luke Griffin (0-02), Cathal White (0-02) Gearoid Healy (0-01)
