The Credit Union SFL Div 6B  Round 5
Ballymacelligott 2-13  Kenmare Shamrocks 2-12
Venue: Ballymacelligott  Date: 27th April  24

This was a vital game for Ballymacelligott and Kenmare. A win for Kenmare would see them top the table and a win for Ballymac would have them joint second with Kenmare. Ballymacelligott were in full flight in the first half. Kenmare fought back in the second half and came within a point of winning.

The Ballymacelligott team were overjoyed to play this Round 5 game at home in Ballymacelligott. After the unprecedented bad weather, it was great to see- our main pitch in such great condition.

Ballymacelligott playing with the strong breeze cruised through the first half. The Half-time score was 2-09 to 0-5. Ballymac’s goals coming from Shane McGillicuddy and Darragh Regan

Half Time score was: Ballymacelligott 2-09 to Kenmare Shamrocks 0-5

Ballymac started the second half without Brian Cassidy who played so well at centre back in the opening half. The Kenmare players returned on the field like men transformed with Cian O’Connor number 24 leading the charge and opening the scoring with a point.

Darragh Regan added one for Ballymac and Kenmare added another.  Following a foul on Maurice O’Connell Kenmare were down to fourteen. Michael Herlihy scored a point from the resulting free. It was now 2-11 to 0-7.

Kenmare scored a goal and a point in quick succession. Maurice O’Connell added a point for Ballymac and an incredible point from Shane McGillicuddy from 40 yards out. This was the home side’s last score of the game with Kenmare dominating from here on.

Kenmare scored a goal and a point and this left four points between the teams with ten minutes left. Kenmare clawed back three more points. The score now was 2-13 to 2-12

Kenmare failed to score from a 45 in the 27th Minute of the game. Ballymac surely would have lost the game but for two great saves on the line by Cian Godley and Mike Herlihy in the dying minutes.  Ballymac held on and won by a point.

Ciarán Brosnan cornerback, and Cian Godley, full back, defended like lions, especially in the last quarter of the game. Brian Cassidy and Shane McGillicuddy (Injured) were big losses. Darragh Regan, Mike Herlihy, and Maurice O’Connell worked exceptionally hard in the forwards.

Considering the way the game went, it was a good result for our team who notched up terrific scores in the first half combined with great defending, when it mattered at the end of the game.

Full Time: Ballymacelligott 2-13 Kenmare Shamrocks 2-12

Team and scorers: Conor Martin, Ciarán Brosnan, Cian Godley, Jonathan Brick, Cathal White, Eoin Culloty, Skye Lynch (0-1) Cathal Culloty (0-1),  Darragh Regan (1-4), Shane McGillicuddy(1-1), Michael Herlihy(0-4) Conor Brick, Jack Tobin , Maurice O’Connell (0-2).
