SENIOR TEAM

Na Gaeil travelled to a wet and windy Ballymacelligott for round 4 of the Division 3 county league on Sunday last.

The visitors settled into the conditions first and kicked 3 points without reply from the boot of D. Carmody. This good start was mainly due to their dominance in the middle through D. O Connor.

With some strong running from the likes N O’Shea , A. Breen and V. Horan Ballymac got themselves back into the game and were unlucky not be go three points in front  with the game level after T. Culloty saved a penalty from the boot of A. Breen.

However Ballymac kicked on from there and outscored Na Gaeil for the rest of the half with points from A. Breen, P.McCarthy, M. Shannahan and a great solo effort from E. Reidy. Ballymac went in at half time 0-8 to 0-6 in in front.

The second half started at a frantic pace with the visitors kicking 4 points and Ballymac responding by kicking 2 in the opening 10 minutes of the half. With the home side struggling to keep up with Na Gaeil’s pace and movement L. Sweeney stood up for Ballymac with some strong running with ball in hand which led to a point from P. Mc’Carthy.

In the 43rd minute Na Gaeil took advantage of sloppy defending to move the ball quickly and score a goal to put 5 points between the teams. This however proved to be the visitors last score of the game.

Over the last quarter Ballymac slowly closed the gap. A disallowed Ballymac goal only seemed to make the home team more determined to get something from the game, and this was achieved with the last kick of the game as P. McCarthy kicked over the equalizing point from a free. The game finished Ballymacelligott 0-15 Na Gaeil 1-12.

BALLYMAC 1-5 CORDAL / SCART 2-9

Scartaglen was the venue for this Castleisland district league final in which we played our local rivals Cordal/Scartaglen. This was always going to be a difficult task against strong opposition.

In the first half we playing into the wind and rain and did not get into our opponents half very often. Scoring opportunities were few and far between. Scart pointed from a free after 5 minutes but Ballymac replied in style.

Eoin O’Malley did well to win a breaking ball and passed to Dara Reagan who headed for goal before laying off to Dara Keane who finished to the net. Scart were on top for the remainder of the half kicking 6 unanswered points despite some fine defending from our lads; with Eddie Rodgers in fine form. Scart scored a goal on the stroke of half time to lead 1-7 to 1-0 at the break.

A low scoring start to the second half saw both sides pointing early on with D. Reagan on target for us. Mid-way through the half he again pointed to edge us closer. However shortly after Scart got 1-1 inside a few minutes to stretch their lead. D. Keane, D. Reagan and ML. Hoare scored our final three points on a wet and windy evening. Eddie Rodgers, Tadhg Brick, Eoin & Liam o’ Malley and Dara Reagan tried hard for us on a difficult outing against physically stronger opponents.

We would like to thank all those who have helped and supported us over the season to-date. Hopefully when the county league starts in mid-June everybody will be fully fit and ready for a new campaign.

U 14 Semi – Final County League Firies 7-15 Ballymac 4-3

This was another tough game for our boys. In the first half we competed very well to hold Firies relatively well. Our defence was again strong and we marshalled the Firies attackers well. The half-time score was Firies 1-9 Ballymac 1-1.

Into the second half and the size and fitness of the Firies team began to tell. The drove forward on many occasions and made us pay the highest price on a number of occasions.

The lads tired under the heavy pressure and the final whistle was a reprieve for them. Best on the night for us was David, and Liam and all our defenders tried hard. We have plenty to work on but there is plenty of ability in these young lads. Brighter days lie ahead.

ACADEMY

The academy took place on Sunday morning on a wet and windy morning.   There was a good turnout considering the weather in all the age groups. The U10 boys played against St Pats Blennerville on Sunday morning and performed well.  They are showing continued improvement week-on-week with David Lucid, Jack O’Connor, Cathal White, and Michael Prendergast impressing.  The U8’s had a busy schedule as they travelled to Castleisland on Friday night last for the first round of Go Games. They played against Scartaglen, Currow, and Desmond’s in what was an enjoyable evening for our lads. We then hosted the St. Pat’s Blennerville U8’s on Sunday morning. The weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the lads and they performed very well.  Best on the day for the U8’s were Cian Harris, Luke Griffin, Micheal O’Connor, and Maurice Harrington.
