Banna Rescue Open Day This Sunday As Part Of 40th Anniversary Celebrations

BANNA Rescue will hold an open day on this Sunday, October 22, from 12noon to 2pm at the boathouse, as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.

Everyone is welcome to the event will provide information on Water Safety, operation of the Irish Coast Guard and local Emergency Services.

The winners of the “Name the Argo” competition will be presented. Also a plaque will be unveiled to commemorate the two drownings in 1981 and 1982, that prompted the setting up of the Search and Rescue Unit at Banna Strand a year later.

Banna Sea Rescue is a voluntary local community based inshore and land Rescue Unit based at Banna Strand covering one of the busiest beaches in the country.

The Rescue Unit consists of approximately 30 volunteer members (male and female) comprising of crew and management.  The crew undergo extensive training under the auspice of the Irish Coastguard and Irish Water Safety.

The Rescue Service operates in close co-operation with other vital emergency respond services including the Irish Naval Service, Irish Coastguard, Irish Water Safety, An Garda Siochana, National Ambulance Service, Kerry Fire and Rescue Service, RNLI, Community Rescue Boats Ireland, Life Guards, and Kerry County Council.

To provide this important service at Banna Strand, funding must be provided to sustain the annual operational and running costs associated with this specialised service.

Funding provided by Kerry County Council and the Irish Coast Guard is supplemented by the local community through locally organised fundraising events. This service cannot be sustained without the continuous support of the local and wider communities.
