Big Rise In New Car Sales Last Month Compared To April Of Last Year

THERE was a huge rise in new car sales in Kerry last month compared to April 2020, according to the latest statistics from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI).

However, this increase was due to the COVID pandemic and the lockdown in place in the country in April of last year.

There were 140 new car registrations in the county in April 2021 compared to just six in the same month last year, an increase of 2,333.33%.

In the four months of this year there have been 1,231 new car sales in Kerry while last year there were 1,153 in the same period, an increase of 6.76%.

So far this year, Toyota is the most popular make of car with 159 units sold, with the other Top 5 made up of Hyundai (157), Ford and Volkswagen (both 151) and Skoda (125).

The Hyundai Tucson is the most popular model sold this year on 82 units, with Ford Focus (55), Volkswagen Tiguan (49), Kia Sportage and Toyota Corolla (44) making up the Top 5.

Diesel cars were the most popular engine type in 523 units with 373 petrol. Next is 189 petrol/electric vehicles sold, a rise of 234% on the same period in 2020, 54 electric (+30%), 48 diesel/electric (+1,100%) and 43 petrol/plug-in electric hybrid (+139%).
