NINE-YEAR-OLD Kayla O’Connor from Curraheen is about to make a beautiful gesture to other girls her own age who are battling cancer.

Later this month, Kayla will be getting her hair cut to a shorter length and donating her long locks to the Princess Trust charity who make wigs for children with cancer.

The idea came to Kayla while she was in the hairdressers with her grandmother Liz O’Connor who, as it happens, is also her third class teacher in Blennerville National School.

“The lady who was having her hair cut was saying that her daughter cut off her hair [for charity] and I was like ‘Oh! why don’t I do that?” said Kayla.

Her hair is for the chop on Thursday, October 27 when Special Needs Assistant, Anne Marie Scott, who is in charge of the scissors, will cut Kayla’s hair in front of the school. Buckets for donation will be past around on the day.

She was excited too that she has got well over 1oo likes on Facebook soon after a post was put up last night about her decision. Grandmother Liz is very proud of Kayla and how she has stuck to her guns.

“I’m amazed, she the type of child that has her own mind. We left her decide over the Summer to see if she might forget about it, but she didn’t,” said Liz O’Connor.

Kayla is also a keen footballer with St Pats GAA and her favourite subjects in school are art, maths and Irish.
