A LABOUR candidate in the Tralee Electoral Area has called for the immediate advertising of the vacant consultant cardiologist role at University Hospital Kerry.
Ben Slimm, a Tralee local election candidate has called for a recruitment process to fill the role at UHK, which has been vacant for over a year.
The hospital is currently operating with a part-time locum cardiologist, however with heart disease being one of the biggest killers, Mr Slimm has stated that the recruitment process must begin immediately.

“The fact that yet again the people of Tralee and Kerry are not being served with basic hospital services such as access to a permanent consultant cardiologist is unbelievable. With an aging population and heart disease currently the cause of one-third of all deaths and one in five premature deaths it remains the most common cause of death in Ireland.
Local councillors have a large role to play in holding hospital management to account for the people they represent. I am sad to see a situation where UHK has not been held to account. Patients in Tralee are entitled to proper care, and a continuity in that care, which can only be managed effectively with a permanent full time consultant cardiologist. I do sincerely call on the management to resolve this issue with urgency.”
