CBS The Green has adopted a policy where students can securely store their phones during school hours using special pouches.

In an age where technology plays an increasingly significant role in daily life, CBS The Green has adopted a thoughtful approach to manage the use of digital devices within its student body.

The school has acknowledged the importance of fostering mutual trust and promoting responsible technology usage, particularly among the digital-savvy generation.

Instead of imposing an outright ban or completely prohibiting the use of mobile phones, CBS The Green has introduced an innovative solution where accessible pouches that enable students to securely store their phones during school hours are provided.

Each student has their own zip pouch provided free by the school. Their phones are turned off and in pouches while on the school campus.

They can be used in class if their teacher deems it necessary for that lesson, for example, during online quizzes and practical subjects like art.

Senior cycle students can leave the campus at lunch so they have full use their phones at lunchtime, while Junior Cycle students remain on campus so the phones remain in their pouch.

This unique approach encourages students to retain ownership of their devices while simultaneously promoting responsible usage.

The decision to implement this policy followed a comprehensive evaluation of our school’s acceptable use policy with all stakeholders.

Principal of CBS The Green, Robert Flaherty, emphasised the integral role of technology in modern life and the importance of harnessing its potential sensibly for students.

“The school recognises the immense advantages that technology offers for both teaching and learning, all the while remaining conscientious of its potential adverse effects.

While navigating this delicate balance, CBS The Green has recently achieved the prestigious title of Microsoft Showcase School for the academic year 2023/2024,” he said.

This recognition places CBS The Green among an elite group of just 10 schools in Ireland to be bestowed with this honour, and it is notably the first school in Kerry to attain this distinction.

“This achievement underscores the school’s unwavering commitment to leveraging digital technology to enhance teaching and learning experiences,” continued Principal Flaherty.

“CBS The Green’s journey as a Microsoft Showcase School serves as a beacon of inspiration for educational institutions, demonstrating how technology and responsible digital citizenship can harmoniously coexist, creating a brighter future for students.”
