A TRALEE Municipal District councillor has called for more to be done to highlight the site of the old Abbey in Tralee as a tourist attraction.

Fianna Fáil Cllr Johnnie Wall was speaking at the meeting of Tralee MD councillors on Monday where he asked that the Council erect some murals and some maps outlining where the historical Abbey was and make the car park a tourist attraction.

He said there needs to be more signage directing tourists towards the area. Cllr Cathal Foley seconded Cllr Wall’s motion and said the signage should be improved on.

In reply, Council management said the MD acknowledged the site as an important historical area of Tralee and that existing signage is in place on the site to give tourist information on the old Abbey, while the location forms part of the Tralee Heritage Trail.

The site will also be waymarked as part of the upcoming Destination Town project. Consideration can be given to the inclusion of a mural following closer examination of the site in the future.

After the last couples of years, I will be surprised if Ireland has a tourist industry in the future.
