SINN Féin County Councillor Deirdre Ferris is calling on Kerry County Council to carry out a major review of traffic calming measures and active travel plans for Ardfert due to the high level of traffic in the village.

It was confirmed on Monday that nearly 7,000 vehicles travel through Ardfert from the Ballyheigue and Causeway area, increasing to nearly 8,000 from the Ardfert area that travel to Tralee on a daily basis.

Cllr Ferris has been calling for a comprehensive review and strategy in Ardert for some time due to several accidents and near misses that have occurred in the village and its surrounding areas.

She said: “The village lacks any pedestrian crossings or cycle lanes despite a large increase in population over the last couple of years, with the opening of two new residential estates. There is also a lack of footpaths in some parts of the village. This, in a time when we are trying to encourage people to leave their vehicles at home.”

Cllr Ferris also said that many residents who live within walking distance must drive from their homes to the church, local shop, post office and to the playground because they feel it isn’t safe to do so on foot or by bike.

“Ardfert Village must be prioritised for traffic calming measures and pedestrian safety measures or there will be a serious accident or injury. There has to be serious consideration and work put into the traffic management of the village to ensure everyone’s safety,” she added.

This request follows on from repeated requests to return the speed limit on the Banna road that was moved closer to the village in the 2019 national review. There have been numerous vehicular accidents since and locals who once lived within the 50 km/h limit are now having to access a main road with an 80 km/h limit.

Kerry County Council will only waste public taxes again by doing a survey when every one passing through or living there can see something need to be done.
The Planners are a bad joke on Kerry.
