A LOCAL councillor believes there is no doubt that HSE recruitment ban is going to have a serious and detrimental impact on the provision of health services in Kerry.

In the wake of the continuance of the recruitment embargo announced by HSE CEO Bernard Gloucester, Sinn Fein Cllr Deirdre Ferris has expressed concerns for the provision of the services and patient safety in University Hospital Kerry and in the community sector.

As a clerical officer in University Hospital Kerry, Cllr Ferris said she can see the initial embargo on Clerical and Administrative grades already impacting the provision of services.

Cllr Ferris said: “The embargo is having a direct negative impact on the provision of health services for the people of Kerry. Services already struggling to cope with increased demand and staff shortages, are now facing even greater problems, due to the prevention of recruiting staff to fill vacant posts.”

“Inpatient Acute Care, Outpatient follow-up care, Mental Health Services, Community Care and Home Care are all going to be affected by this decision,” she added.

Cllr Ferris is calling on the HSE to lift the embargo and for the government to ensure that funding and resources for the health service matches the demand on those services.

“The government need to reverse this decision and lift the embargo as these measures will have a severe impact on the safety of care and will press staff into unsafe conditions and into an extreme level of burnout. This will result in even more staff wanting to leave the health service, which is the last thing we need,” said Cllr Ferris.
