Cllr Terry O’Brien Won’t Be Contesting The General Election

COUNCILLOR Terry O’Brien will not run for the Labour Party in the upcoming general election.

In a statement issued this morning, Cllr O’Brien said; “I would like to confirm that I have been approached by the Labour Party to contest the 2020 General Election.

“I would have been honoured to represent the party, as I believe in what it stands for, but after a few days of deep negotiations and reflection, I have decided not to put my name forward.”

“After 20 years serving the people of Kerry, I am happy to continue in my role on Kerry County Council. I would also like to thank those who have contacted me to offer their support,” he said.

Cllr O’Brien previously ran unsuccessfully for the party in the 2007 general election. He was first elected to Tralee Town Council in 1999, to Kerry County Council in 2004 and has been returned in every election since then.

There are 10 candidates declared to run so far in the Kerry Constituency. Three Fianna Fáil (John Brassil TD, Cllr Norma Foley, Cllr Norma Moriarty), two Fine Gael (Brendan Griffin TD, Cllr Mike Kennelly), one Sinn Fein (Cllr Pa Daly), one Aontú (Sonny Foran), one Green Party (Cleo Murphy) and two Independents (Michael Healy Rae TD and Danny Healy Rae TD).
