TRALEE’S Bryan Cooper landed his first win of the Cheltenham festival 2017, when he rode Apples Jade to victory in the Mares’ Hurdle earlier today.

It was already a good day for Kerry jockeys as 17 year old Jack Kennedy from Dingle won the festival opener on board 25/1 shot Laibaik, trained by Gordon Elliott.

Apple’s Jade went over the last surrounded by Willie Mullins’s two mares Vroum Vroum Mag and favourite Limini but stuck to it to get a second festival win of the day for Irish trainer Elliott who later claimed a hat-trick of wins when 16/1 shot, Tiger Roll won the JT McNamara Hunt Chase.

Cooper also had a third place finish in the Champion Hurdle on Petit Mouchoir, but Apples Jade at 7/2 gave a delighted Cooper a win on opening day and hope of greater things to come this week.
