Edenburn House.

A FORMER convalescent home and hospital, located between Tralee and Castleisland, was sold for €1.1m last month.

Edenburn House, located just off the N21 about 10km from Tralee, had been put on the market in October of 2022 with a €1,600,000 guide price. According to the Property Price Register, it fetched a €1,100,000 price in September.

It was built around 1760 and is situated on 19 acres. In the nineteenth century it was occupied by Edward Fitzgerald Day and then by Samuel Murray Hussey, land agent to Lord Kenmare and other estates.

It was later used by the Southern Health Board for tuberculosis patients from the mid 1930’s to the mid 1960’s. After this it used as a convalescent home and care hospital but closed in 1988.

It was purchased in 1998 and the owner subsequently set about restoring a significant section of the main house, as well as installing new heating, plumbing and electrics.

Earlier this year, Deputy Michael Healy Rae called on the HSE to explore the possibilities of purchasing the property for use for further public residential care for older people. However, the HSE confirmed at the time that they had no plans to purchase Edenburn.
