Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on some films on RTE and TG4 tonight…

When it takes almost 20 years to reach the third instalment of a trilogy, it is not a good sign.

In Cats & Dogs: Paws Unite (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) an orange pussycat named Gwen (voiced by Melissa Rauch, Bernie from ‘The Big Bang Theory’) and a sheepdog named Roger (Max Greenfield) secretly keep watch on things as monitors for the organisation Furry Animals Rivalry Termination (Please feel free to take the initials to make the acronym yourself).

Unfortunately, Pablo (George Lopez), a super villain cockatoo, has plotted with a tech-savvy Tegu Lizard (Paul Dobson) to hack Wi-Fi networks worldwide in order to sow discord between cats and dogs again, thereby encouraging humans to adopt neglected non-canine or non-feline creatures like them.

From one extreme to the other, The Commitments (Saturday 9.15pm RTE2) is one of the most famous and popular Irish films ever made.

An unemployed music fanatic decides to be a producer by promoting a top quality soul band from Dublin.  He trawls through his working-class neighbourhood and auditions unlikely musicians and singers and puts a band together.

Based on the Roddy Doyle book, and directed by Alan Parker, this film won BAFTAs for Best Film, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.  It stars, among others, Robert Arkins, Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle, Bronagh Gallagher, Glen Hansard, Andrew Strong and Colm Meaney.

It was the first of The Barrytown Trilogy, and was followed by The Snapper and The Van.

Can men and women ever just be friends?  In When Harry Met Sally (Saturday 10pm TG4), Billy Crystal (Harry) and Meg Ryan (Sally) have different attitudes to life, meet by chance and develop a friendship.

During the following years, they meet occasionally, but a mutual attraction begins to put pressure on their friendship.

Directed by Rob Reiner and written by Nora Ephron, this film figures highly on the “Best Of” lists of Romantic Comedy films and also stars Carrie Fisher , and in a famous cameo, the Directors mother, Estelle, in the famous “I’ll have whatever she’s having” scene.

The film is interspersed with scenes of older couples telling how they met.  The last couple are the real life Harry and Sally.

Following an unpleasant incident on a plane, Dave (Adam Sandler) is forced to go on an Anger Management (Saturday 11.40pm RTE1) course.

However, he quickly comes to the conclusion that his unconventional therapist, Dr Buddy Rydell, is the crazy one, when the deranged doctor moves in with him and turns his life upside down. The fact that Dr Buddy is played by the brilliant Jack Nicholson should have been his second hint!

Directed by Peter Segal, and also starring Marisa Tomei, Woddy Harrelson, John Turturro and an uncredited John C. Reilly, this is a dark, but very funny film.
