Our movie guy, James Finnegan, has some recommendations for your viewing pleasure today and tonight…

Roxanne (Saturday 3.40pm RTE1) stars Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah in this modern setting of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play ‘Cyrano De Bergerac’, directed by Fred Schepisi and with a screenplay by Steve Martin.

A sensitive, artistic and witty fireman, CD (Steve Martin) is very conscious of his huge nose.

He is secretly in love with the beautiful Roxanne (Daryl Hannah) who is in turn attracted to the handsome, but limited, Chris (Rick Rossovich).

Chris asks for CD’s help in wooing Roxanne, while Roxanne looks for CD to help her get together with Chris.

This is a little gem of a romantic comedy, with Martin especially charming as CD.  Does this unlikely hero win the heart of the beautiful lady? You should watch to find out.

A teenager, Sean (Josh Hutcherson) picks up a distress signal coming from the middle of the ocean in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (Saturday 6.35 RTE1).  He suspects it was sent by his grandfather who has been missing for some time.

Joining an expedition to find the source, he comes across an unexplored island full of strange creatures and exotic challenges.

Also starring Dwyane Johnson, Michael Caine and Vanessa Hudgens, this is loosely based on ‘Treasure Island’, ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ and Jules Verne’s ‘Mysterious Island’ and is undemanding fare for a Saturday evening.

In The Accountant (Saturday 9.25pm RTE1), Ben Afleck plays Christian Wolff plays an accountant hired by the Mob to money launder their ill gotten gains.

When the US Treasury Department starts to get too close, he decides to take on a legitimate client, specifically a robotics company, to deflect their interest.

Unfortunately, while working through this company’s books, he finds discrepancies worth millions of dollars.

Directed by Gavin O’Connor and also starring Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons, Jeffrey Tambor and John Lithgow, this is a story that seems simple, but gets more complex as it goes on.

Based on a true story, a group of middle aged Yorkshire women come up with a novel method of raising funds for their friend’s husband’s cancer treatment by posing nude in a calendar – not usually the sort of thing for which members of the Women’s Institute are known.

The appropriately named Calendar Girls (Saturday 9.30pm TG4) stars Helen Mirren, Julie Walters, Celia Imrie, Annette Crosbie and Penelope Wilton.

The ultimate ‘what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’ story is The Hangover (Saturday 10.30pm RTE2).

Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis make a good trio in this witty comedy about a weekend in Las Vegas for a Stag Party.

Their plans to take it easy go badly astray when they wake up the next morning to find the groom, Doug, missing, a tiger in the bedroom and no memory of the night before.

Retracing their steps uncover a complex series of events and destruction.  This is the first, and best of this particular franchise. Enjoy!
