Our movie guy, James Finnegan, suggests some films for your viewing pleasure on RTE and TG4 today…

Our first film today is very much of its time.  In Arabesque (Saturday 3.45pm RTE1), there is an assassination plot against a prominent Middle Eastern politician.

An American professor of hieroglyphics at Oxford University, David Pollock (Gregory Peck), is recruited to help foil the scheme.

Not only must Pollock decode information believed hidden in hieroglyphics, but must also contend with a mysterious man Beshraavi played by Alan Badel.

Beshraavi’s beautiful lover, Yazmin (Sophia Loren) seems willing to help Pollock, but can she be trusted?

Cinderella (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is a romantic, musical update of the traditional story.  Written and directed by Kay Cannon, it features pop and rock hits in addition to several original songs.

Cinderella (Camila Cabello) is an ambitious young woman who dreams of establishing her own dress shop.

She catches the eye of Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine) who goes undercover as a commoner and invites her to an upcoming ball.

Also starring Idina Menzel as Stepmother Vivian, Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan, you know how this is going to end, but is a charming in its own right.

Tomb Raider (Saturday 9.05 RTE2) is the Alicia Vikander interpretation of kickboxing heiress Lara Croft.

Laura has refused to take up her inheritance from her father as she is convinced he is still alive, albeit missing and she earns a living as a bike courier.

However, when she hears the country estate could be sold off unless she claims it, she reluctantly agrees.  She then finds a pre-recorded message from her father which gives some clues as to his possible whereabouts and she sets out to find him.

Also starring Dominic West, Walton Goggins and Kristin Scott Thomas, this is a little more grounded than earlier versions and Ms Vikander gives it socks in the title role.

Just in case anyone’s Lotto numbers come up tonight It Could Happen To You (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) could be a cautionary tale.

A cop, Charlie (Nicolas Cage) shares his lottery ticket with a waitress Yvonne (Rosie Perez), in place of a tip.

Unfortunately his wife is somewhat less happy with this arrangement when their numbers come up, and Charlie insists on keeping his promise.

Creed (Saturday 9.45pm RTE1) is an excellent spin off from the “Rocky” franchise that in turn set out its own series of films.

Adonis “Donnie” Johnson (Michael B Jordan) is the illegitimate son of former heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed, who died in the ring.

Adonis asks his father’s old rival and friend, veteran Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) for help as he begins his own career in the ring. However, Rocky is facing his own challenges.

Stallone is in excellent form and is ably supported by Phyllica Rashad, Tessa Thompson and Jordan himself. Enjoy!
