Finnegan On Films: Comedy And Drama Escapism From The World Cup

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, says there’s a paucity of films on TV today…

A sparse selection of films for those who are looking from a break from the World Cup, but there’s some quality in the scarcity.

Who doesn’t love the cute, chaotic Minions?  They return in Despicable Me 3 (Saturday 7.00 pm RTE1) along with Gru (Steve Carell) as his merry band of yellow aids.

Gru has been expelled from the Anti-Villain League after making a mess of a mission.  He sets off to meet his long lost twin brother Dru, also voiced by the wonderfully talented Carell.

The two brothers team up to take on Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) a former 1980’s child actor bent on World Domination who first wants to destroy Hollywood when his TV series is cancelled.

Also starring the vocal talents of Kristen Wiig, Steve Coogan, Jenny Slate and Julie Andrews this is just a joy that retains the charm of the previous editions in the series.  Enjoy!

Next up is a film that launched a thousand memes as well as an unexpected action hero career for Liam Neeson in Taken (Saturday 9.30pm RTE2).

An American teenager travelling through Europe is abducted by a gang of sex traffickers.  What they don’t realise is that the girl’s dad is a former CIA agent who, to be fair, gives the abductors a warning.  Please feel free to join in…

“If you let my daughter go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you. I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”

However, the baddies don’t take the hint and much mayhem ensues, in this and subsequent sequels.

Directed by Pierre Morel and written by Luc Besson and Robert Mark Karem, the film also stars Famke Janssen, Maggie Grace and Katie Cassidy, this is a roller coaster of an action film.

In the crowded genre that is the rom-com, The Five-Year Engagement (Saturday 10pm TG4) is definitely one of the better ones, thanks in no small part to the chemistry between the two leads.

One year after they meet, Tom (Jason Segal) and Violet (Emily Banks) get engaged on the anniversary of their first meeting.

Unfortunately, a series of unforeseen events forces them to cancel the planning and postpone the Big Day.  A job opportunity allows them to make a fresh start in another part of the country, but it also gives them pause for thought about getting married.

Also starring Rhys Ifans, Chris Pratt and Allison Brie, directed by Nicholas Stoller and written by him and Jason Segal, this story helps make you believe and care for the characters, which makes it stand out. Enjoy!
