Our movie guy, James Finnegan, picks five films on RTE/TG4 for your viewing pleasure this Saturday night…

Matthew McConaughey reprises his role as koala theatre impresario Buster Moon in the animated sequel Sing 2 (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1).

Buster and friends are thriving in his newly rebuilt theatre.  However, Buster, as always dreams, of bigger things.  He encourages them to audition for entertainment mogul Jimmy Crystal.

Against the odds they gain his attention, by allowing him to think they have a personal connection with reclusive rock star Clay Calloway – which they don’t!

Also starring the vocal talents of Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton and Bono this is another fun film in what is becoming yet another franchise.

Ryan Gosling and an Oscar-winning Emma Stone star in Damien Chazelle’s musical La La Land (Saturday 9.40pm RTE2).

Struggling jazz pianist Sebastian (Gosling) and aspiring actress Mia (Stone) fall in love while trying to realise their ambitions and aspirations in Los Angeles.

However, the struggles of keeping true to their hopes and dreams, without compromising their commitment to each other, prove more difficult than expected.

A wonderful screenplay, direction, cinematography, soundtrack and the chemistry between the two leads make this a most entertaining and surprising watch.

Barton Fink (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) is written, produced, edited and directed by the Coen Brothers Joel and Ethan, and regular readers will know of my admiration for their body of work.

A 1940’s up and coming Broadway playwright Barton Fink (John Turturro) accepts a Hollywood contract and money to write film scripts.

However, he finds himself stuck in a downtown dilapidated hotel, suffering a serious bout of writers block, and then finds himself as a suspect in a murder investigation.

His only help and support is his neighbour Charlie Meadows (John Goodman) but is he all he seems to be?

Also starring Judy Davies, Michael Lerner, John Mahony, Tony Shalhoub and Steve Buscemi, this is a wonderful quirky, dark comedy well worth watching.

The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society (Saturday 11.55pm RTE1) is set in 1946 and stars Lily James as writer Juliet Ashton.

She is a London based writer who has been corresponding with a resident on the island of Guernsey, which was under German occupation during the Second World War.

She decides to visit the island and meet the members of the Book Club.  However, she finds that their stories are far more intricate and involved than she could have imagined.

Woody Harrelson stars as The Walker (Saturday 11.55pm RTE2), a middle aged gay man, Carter Page, who escorts the wives of Washington’s powerful figures to social events, in place of their husbands.

When the lover of one of the women he escorts is found stabbed to death, Carter tries to protect his friend by lying to the police.  This finds him named as the chief suspect in the murder investigation.

Directed and Written by Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, American Gigolo), this also stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Lauren Bacall and Ned Beatty. Enjoy!
