With Tralee Omniplex back in business, James Finnegan looks at some blockbusters from years gone by currently playing…

As the return to what passes for normal continues, Tralee Omniplex is offering more blockbusters for your enjoyment – just remember that you have to pre-book your tickets online in advance.

Directed by Richard Donner and with a screenplay by Mario Puzo, Superman (1978) is the daddy of all comic book movies.  There is no dark psychological angst, no inner conflict but it totally brings this superhero to glorious colourful real life.

Scientist Jor-el (Marlon Brando) sends his baby son Kal-el to Earth from the doomed planet Krypton. The baby is found and raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent.

As the baby, now called Clark, grows, he begins to develop abilities far beyond those of ordinary mortals and as Superman, fights for truth, justice and the ‘American Way’.  This story is held together by a sublime performance by Christopher Reeve as the titular hero.

As reviewed last week, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is still on screen.  Joining it this week is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the next in the series of adventures of Harry, Hermione and Ron about their second year at Hogwarts, bringing them more challenges and, as the title suggests, secrets.

Also on show is the live action version of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, also starring Emma “Hermione” Watson as Belle, who tries to save her father from a beastly creature, who turns out to be a Prince under an enchanted spell.

This remake of the animated classic has its own virtues and charms, and is well worth a visit for all the family.

The songs, story and performances by Dan Stevens (Beast), Luke Evans (Gaston) and Josh Gad (LeFou) are neatly counterbalanced by Emma Thompson (Mrs Potts) Ian McKellen (Cogsworth) and Ewan McGregor (Lumiere) as the cursed tableware.

A Star is Born is the fourth version of this story of the muse becoming the star, and, in my opinion, this is the best of them.  I must admit I came late to the Lady Gaga Appreciation Society, but she gives an absolutely sublime performance in this film.

Jackson “Jack” Maine (Bradley Cooper, who also produced and directed the film) discovers and falls for Ally (Lady Gaga) a singer-songwriter who has been unsuccessful in getting a professional music career. As Ally’s star rises, Jacks personal addictions and difficulties become more and more of a problem.

A great film, which despite its many well deserved awards, is almost underrated. Enjoy and stay safe!
