Our movie guy, James Finnegan, says there’s plenty for fans of western, romantic comedy and action films on TV today…

Described as the best Hitchcock film that Hitchcock never made, Charade (Saturday 2.30pm RTE1) tells of a distraught widow being chased by her husband’s killers, who have connected her to a missing substantial amount of money.

Fortunately she meets up with a charming, mysterious stranger who does appear to have difficulty sticking to one name.

Starring Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant and, in supporting roles, Walter Matthau, James Coburn and George Kennedy, this is a film full of witty repartee as well as a wonderful Henry Mancini score and delicately directed by Stanley Donen.

In Dora and the Lost City of Gold (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1), having spent many years exploring the jungle with her parents, Dora must face the terrors of High School.

However, when her parents disappear, Dora, with her best friend Boots the monkey, Diego, a mysterious jungle inhabitant and a motley collection of teenagers, must lead them on a mission to find her parents and solve the mystery behind a lost city of gold.

This live action version of the popular children’s cartoon stars Isabela Moner, Eva Longoria and Jeff Wahlberg.

In the delightful comedy-western Maverick (Saturday 9.15pm RTE1) wisecracking gambler Bret Maverick (Mel Gibson) and con artist Annabelle Bransford (Jodie Foster) cheat their way across the Wild West to make the money to stake them into a once- in-a-lifetime Poker Tournament.

Hot on their heels is a ruthless rival Angel (Alfred Molina), but they have a principled lawman Marshall Zane Cooper (James Garner – who played Maverick in the TV series) with them as they make their way to Commodore Duvall’s (James Coburn again) steam boat, the venue for the Big Game.

Directed by Richard Donner and written by William Goldman, this is a joy from start to finish.  Spot all the Western favourites doing cameos.

Love and Other Drugs (Saturday 9.30pm TG4) is an interesting film, although it can’t quite seem to make its mind up as to what genre it wishes to inhabit.

A cynical womanising sales rep for a pharmaceutical company, Jim (Jake Gyllenhaal) falls for a waitress Maggie (Anne Hathaway) who enjoys a life of no commitments.

Normally this would suit Jim just fine, but he finds himself falling for her in a big way.  Then he finds out Maggie has Parkinson’s disease.

In a very similar story to the original, Taken 2 (Saturday 9.30pm RTE1) former CIA agent Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) shoots his way around Istanbul, when his wife Lenore (Famke Janssen) is kidnapped by the Albanian gangster whose son Mills killed.

Daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) helps out Dad, with his very particular set of skills, and the body count rises dramatically.

Finally, a Confederate veteran crosses America after the Civil War, seeking both revenge for his murdered family and sanctuary with a strange assortment of fellow travellers  in The Outlaw Josey Wales (Saturday 11.15 RTE1).

Directed and starring Clint Eastwood, in one of his finest films, with Chief Dan George and Sondra Locke. Enjoy!
