Finnegan On Films: Super Heroes And Saturday Night Scares On The Box

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, picks some movies to watch on the box today…

The first film of this Halloween Weekend is a bit of a horror in its own right.

Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (Saturday 4.05pm RTE1) is the last of the Christopher Reeve series and had the best of intentions, but unfortunately was beset with behind the scenes problems.

The story idea is quite an interesting one, when Superman decides to rid the world of nuclear weapons, but ends up facing a deadly radioactive villain and Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman).

However, when you find Milton Keynes standing in for New York/Metropolis, you know you are in trouble.

The obvious chemistry between Reeve in his dual role as Superman and Clark Kent and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane) helps keep the show on the road, and a couple of scenes, notably Superman’s speech to the United Nations and one final flight for the couple around the city only makes the poor (cheaper?) special effects even more disappointing.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween (Saturday 5.35pm RTE1) is based on the R. L. Stine book series of the same name.

Two youngsters unwittingly unleash all manner of monsters from a locked manuscript found in an abandoned house.  It is sometimes scary (a little parental guidance is required) but it is frequently funny, and not the worst film to lead you into Halloween Trick or Treating.

Based on the famous 1960’s television series, The Fugitive (Saturday 9.45pm RTE1) sees Harrison Ford star as Dr. Richard Kimble.

He is falsely accused and convicted of his wife’s murder, but this is a very inventive and committed man, desperate to prove his innocence.

He escapes custody and goes on the run to try and find the mysterious one-armed man whom Kimble believes is the real killer.

He is also pursued by a tenacious, by–the-book US Marshall, Gerard, played by Tommy Lee Jones, who scooped the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his efforts.

Speaking of people escaping whilst in custody (ironically in a film showing at the same time -Spooky!!!) Halloween (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) sees the almost inevitable return of Michael Myers.

Despite there being about nine other films in this series, this is the 1978 original, and Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) has to face the serial killer.

If you like slasher-movies, you are in luck.  If you don’t, enjoy watching this from behind the sofa.  In a piece of absolutely useless information, Michael’s mask was actually a William Shatner Star Trek mask that was the only one available at the time.  Don’t say I don’t take care of you!

Set in 1990’s Ireland, Dating Amber (Saturday 11.50 RTE2) tells of two closeted teenage friends, Eddie (Fionn O’Shea) and Amber (Lola Petticrew) who decide to stage a straight relationship with each other to stop the prying speculation about their sexuality.  Enjoy!
