Our movie guy, James Finnegan, has some film suggestions for your viewing pleasure on this Saturday…

Empire of the Sun (Saturday 3pm RTE1) is a lesser known Stephen Spielberg film based on the true life events of author J.G. Ballard.

Jamie “Jim” Graham (Christian Bale in an early film appearance) is a young English boy living in Shanghai.

However, he is separated from his family during the Japanese invasion during the Second World War, and ends up in an internment camp, living off his wits.

Also starring John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson and Nigel Havers, this is a film more appreciated now than it was on release.

The Witches (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is from the fertile imagination of Roald Dahl book, and directed by Robert Zemeckis.

It is 1967, and an orphan boy, Charlie (Jahzir Bruno) goes to live with his grandmother, but then finds himself threatened by diabolical witches, disguised as glamorous women (please feel free insert your own joke here).

Charlie and Granny move to a seaside hotel, but unfortunately, that is the venue for the Grand High Witch gathering of her coven, and there are diabolical plans in store.  Mwah Ha Ha!!!

Also starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer and Stanley Tucci, this might be a little disturbing for the smallies.

Gal Gadot returns as Amazonian warrior Wonder Woman/Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 1984 (Saturday 9.30pm RTE2).

She must deal with Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal), an extremely ambitious business man with desires for great wealth could have deadly repercussions for the rest of humanity.  He is searching for the Dreamstone, an ancient artefact that grants its owner whatever they desire.

Diana also has to contend with a work colleague and friend who obtains superhuman powers, and you know how tricky that can be to handle.

Liam Neeson continues his series turns as a middle aged gent dealing with unique circumstances in the entertaining thriller The Commuter (Saturday 9.30pm RTE1).

Michael MacCauley (Neeson) is a recently laid-off insurance salesman and former police officer.  His is on his usual commute home when he receives a phone call from a mysterious stranger and offered $100,000 if he can locate a fellow passenger.

However, just to add a little more drama and incentive to Michael’s search, his fellow passengers are under deadly threat should he refuse.

The End Of the Tour (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) is a powerful drama based on a true story.

Jesse Eisenberg plays Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky and the film tells of the five days he spent interviewing author David Foster Wallace (Jason Segal) which took place just after the publication of Wallace’s acclaimed 1996 novel “Infinite Jest”.

This is a Marmite type of film – you will either love it or hate it, but it was interesting to see this subject matter treated as a two hander.

Anthony Mingella’s romantic drama Mr Wonderful (Saturday 11.35pm RTE1) stars Matt Dillon as an electrician who tries to find his ex-wife, played by Annabella Sciorra, a new man so he can stop paying her alimony.  Enjoy!
