Gallarus Oratory will host an event next Friday.

A SPECIAL one-off Culture Night event will take place at Gallarus Oratory on next Friday, September 22.

The ancient church, set in the landscape of the Dingle Peninsula for over 1000 years, will host an outdoor art installation.

Projection artist, Tim Schmelzer, created this site-specific light and sound production that links ancient heritage to living culture as part of the Culture Night Kerry programme.

Late at Gallarus Oratory is a highlight of the Culture Night Kerry 2023 programme.  The audience is invited to watch as rays of light break through the stones and the animation begins.

The structure of the building comes to life in an approximately 10-minute projection that deals with the architecture and history of Gallarus Oratory.

The projection is accompanied by a specially composed sound production that includes the sound of the sea and whale songs – a reminder of the nearby North Atlantic.

The artist, Tim Schmelzer, lives and works in Vienna. The focus of his work is on the creation of visuals for projection in public space. His visual artwork has been projected on noted Austrian art institutions, museums, as part of cultural events, and in international light art festivals.

Tim Schmelzer has visited Ireland since childhood and returns to Brandon, in Kerry each year with his family. He expanded his light art projects to landscape and building projections in Ireland.

This includes a project that incorporated abandoned World War 2 lookout posts on the Kerry coast that featured on Nationwide in 2013.

Late at Gallarus Oratory will be an approximate 10-minute projection that will begin at 8.30pm and repeat every 15 minutes until midnight. Drawings by local students at Scoil Mhaolcheadair will also be presented during the short breaks in the projection staging.

Kerry County Council Arts Office in collaboration with Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Gallarus Oratory Visitor Centre, and OPW are delighted to present this project as part of the Culture Night 2023 programme thanks to the support of the Arts Council of Ireland and the Culture Night Late Fund.

A free shuttle service by Local Link Kerry will operate from Dingle town to Gallarus Oratory. The first shuttle will depart the quay bus stop opposite Supervalu in Dingle at 8.15pm and run every 20 – 25 minutes.

Printed brochures of the full programme are available in the local libraries and various locations around the county. An e-brochure can also be found on the Arts Office website. All events are free. https://culturenight.ie/
