THE HSE is advising parents of children suspected of having measles to contact their GP and not to bring children to  surgeries as the disease is highly contagious.

There are now 15 recorded cases of measles in Kerry. The outbreak began when a person with the disease flew into Kerry Airport in April.

Strict visiting restrictions for children are still in place at University Hospital Kerry in attempts to stop the spread of the disease.

Dr Martin Boyd, consultant at the emergency department at UHK, said measles was difficult to spot until a rash appears and the most contagious period was four days before the rash, and four days after its appearance.

A sore throat, head cold, runny nose, conjunctivitis, cough and fever are among the symptoms.

However, people who have received the two sets of MMR vaccinations, administered normally at 12 months and four years of age, were 99% protected against the virus.
