THE Imperial Hotel will send all its plastic takeaway cups, lids and straws off to the recycling plant to make way for 100% green, compostable utensils to demonstrate a genuine commitment to play its part in the recently launched GLAN initiative.

GLAN is a community movement designed to develop Tralee as a greener and environmentally sustainable town. GLAN is the Irish word for clean, and also stands for Green Local Area Network.

Olive Sheehan, Proprietor and Derek Carroll, General Manager of the Imperial Hotel were joined by Niall O’Shea from Hugh Jordan, supplier of compostable catering materials, Brian Stephenson of Glan Tralee and the Tralee Environment Task Force, and a representative of Down to Earth, Emily Fitzgerald at the launch on Monday.

Tralee and Dingle are the first towns in Ireland to roll out GLAN. Organizations and individuals can get involved by going to www.tralee.ie/Glan.
