Increase In Number Of People Treated For Alcohol Abuse In Kerry

The amount of people seeking treatment for alcohol abuse in Kerry has increased.

THERE has been an increase in the amount of people treated for alcohol abuse in Kerry.

According to figures gathered by the Health Research Board – 185 out of every 100,000 people in Kerry sought treatment for alcohol abuse last year.

That number is up on the 2012 total of 174 people out of 100,000.

Kerry also remains among the counties with the highest proportion of people treated for alcohol abuse.

The county lies ninth in the list of counties with the highest alcohol treatment rate, alongside midland counties, Longford (8) and Offaly (10)

Over the course of the year, our neighbours in Cork saw a slight drop in the amount of people seeking treatment, going from 160 to 159 out of 100,000.

Limerick was among the counties with the lowest instances of people seeking treatment with a total of 74.7 out of 100,000.

Though there was an increase in the amount of people in Kerry seeking treatment, the figure nationally has decreased substantially over the last two years, going from 8,604 cases in 2011, to 7,549 in 2013.

This represents a drop of 12.3%.

The counties with the highest figures were, Waterford, Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim and Carlow. While the lowest were, Roscommon, Clare, Mayo, Meath and Limerick.
