INSTITUTE of Technology Tralee in partnership with the Skillnet Networks have launched a new retail management programme.

The programme is tailored to the specific needs of the local retail sector.  It was designed by staff at IT Tralee in close consultation with significant players in the retail sector and with representatives of the three Skillnet Networks in Kerry.

The new programme allows those currently working in retailing to continue working with their current employer while studying for their BA in Retail Experience Management.

Each student will be nominated for participation on the programme by their employer. After three years students will graduate with their degree.

Students will attend IT Tralee’s North Campus for one 4-week study block each semester.  These blocks will be held in February and October each year.  This scheduling minimises the disruption for employers during the busier periods of the retail year while giving staff an opportunity to gain a recognized educational qualification.

In addition to the in-class study blocks students will also undertake work-based learning throughout the programme and take an additional online module each semester. This method of education delivery is referred to as blended learning.

Speaking at the launch, Mary Rose Stafford, Head of the School of Business Studies at IT Tralee said: “This retail management programme is designed in response to the demand from the retail community and aims to meet the need for ongoing career development.  It was designed for industry, with the help of industry. Prior to this, Kerry-based retailers had to send staff to Dublin or Cork for training with all the attendant cost and time implications.  Now they can get their qualifications right here in Kerry.  The practical nature of the program means that participants can immediately apply their new knowledge and new ways of thinking to their work.”

Skillnet Networks in Kerry are part funding the program, paying a minimum of 25% of all student fees. The fees for the program are €3000 per annum.

South West Gnó Skillnet and IT Tralee is currently taking applications for this new programme.  The deadline for receipt of applications is December 9th. The program begins in January. For more click here
