James Finnegan with Jackie and Gerard Treanor, David and Liz Elton, Bryan and Cathal Carr, Susan Sugrue and Kathleen Finnegan  on his 1,000th day of walking, at the Town Park on Thursday.

WHEN James Finnegan set out on a walking on New Year’s Day back in 2021, little did he think he’d be doing the same thing every day for the next (almost) three years.

But that he did and yesterday — two years, eight months and 28 days later — he  completed his 1000 continuous days of walking challenge, covering over seven thousand miles during this time – further than Tralee to Tokyo!

During that time he has raised awareness and significant funds for local and national charities, notably Debra Ireland and Tralee Soup Kitchen among others.

Thanks to the support, kindness and generosity of his followers, it has worked out at raising nearly eight euro per day of walking.

A regular contributor to TraleeToday.ie as a film reviewer, his popular daily walking posts on social media has brought the views, amenities and attractions of Tralee and Kerry to the attention of a wide audience.

He has given presentations on his progress to Toastmasters International, Tangible Ireland and other national and international events.

James has also been interviewed on local, national and international media outlets including RTE, Newstalk and the BBC on his walking challenge.

He has achieved a shared Guinness World Record, took part in over a hundred Parkrun events and numerous virtual challenges as well as volunteering in local, regional, national and international Festivals and Conferences.

James is particularly known locally over the years for his contributions to among others TEDxTralee, The Park Festival, Feile Tralee, An Turas Mor, Dig Tralee and Culture Night.
