U-14 BOYS:
Our under 14’s played St Pats in the Central League and came away with a good win on a 4-8 to 0-9 score line . The foundation for this victory was set by a very solid defensive effort where goalkeepers Cian Barden(first half) and Sean Broderick(second half) kept clean sheets . Dara Sheridan at centre back had his best game this year and James Sheehan also played a vital role sweeping up a lot of loose ball .
Alex o Se and Padraig White at midfield put in good shifts and up front Paraic O Callaghan, Dylan O Brien and Tyrese Fkaherty were always dangerous . This was a notable victory as we had been well beaten earlier in the year by this St Pats team .
We remain unbeaten now in the Central League and travel to Cromane next Monday evening for a 7pm throw in.
Training continues on Wednesday evening at 6.30 p.m.
U-12 BOYS:
The U12s don’t have any competitions for a few weeks so training continues on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm-8pm as normal.
JOHN MITCHELS ANNUAL JUVENILE BLITZ:
On Saturday last we held our annual juvenile football blitz for the U-8 & U-10 age groups. This was the 15th year this tournament has been held and it is one of the most popular in the county.
Over 350 juvenile stars of the future took part on the day and all players enjoyed a great day of football. The success of the blitz was evident by the large amount of tweets that were posted by clubs who took part. In total sixty one football matches were played on six different pitches.
Once again the tournament organiser Kevin Mc Mahon had things running like clockwork with all games running on time. Thanks to all the referees, the players, the coaches and the club volunteers who gave up their time and helped out on the day. See photos of the teams by clicking here
U-10
Twelve teams also took part in the U-10 blitz, the teams in this age group were divided into two groups of 6 teams with the top team from each group qualifying for the final. Group one included John Mitchels, Castleisland Desmond’s, Castlegregory, Ballymac, St Pats and Austin Stacks, with Na Misteallaigh, Keel, Churchill, Beale, Milltown/Castlemaine & Na Gaeil playing in group two.
There were some cracking games of football played with just a point or two separating the teams at the final whistle in most of the matches. The final was contested by Austin Stacks and Keel, this was a very close affair with both teams playing great football, at the final whistle Austin Stacks were victorious.
Tournament organiser Kevin McMahon and club chairman Matt Moloney presented the winners trophy to the winning captain, while Juvenile club chairman Noel O’Connor presented medals to the players from both teams, Kevin congratulated both teams on reaching the final and thanked all the clubs who took part on the day. Well done to all the players who played in the blitz.
U-8
Twelve teams took part in the U-8 blitz, this was played in the spirit of the go games with the emphasis on taking part, the teams were divided into two groups of six teams with each team playing five games of football, there was fantastic football skills on show from these enthusiastic players with all of the players giving their all throughout the day. The teams that took part included John Mitchels, Castleisland Desmond’s, Ardfert, Ballymac, St Pats, Austin Stacks, Keel, Churchill, Beale, Milltown/Castlemaine, Dr Crokes & Na Gaeil. Well done to all the players.
SUMMER CAMP:
The annual John Mitchels Summer Camp took place last week at our Centre of Excellence in Ballyseedy with over 80 boys and girls in attendance. With glorious sunshine for most of the week, the children enjoyed a variety of games and sports under the supervision of our many leaders and helpers. Every day the children enjoyed milk donated by Lee Strand and fruit donated by Shane Mc Mahon and Anthony Clifford.
Johnathan Lyne from the Kerry team attended on Thursday and shared with the children his skills and knowledge. He also ran a competition and the winner of the signed football from the Kerry team was Darragh Cunnane, who displayed an impressive array of skills.
A sincere thank you to all of our club camp leaders and helpers, to Paul Barden who ran a set dancing workshop which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, to Active Kingdom and JT Deenihan for supplying the inflatable obstacle course, to Lee Strand Co-operative for their continued support, to Fyffes, Horans Fruit & Veg, to Humphrey, Claire and Noel Griffin and Noel O’Connor (Juvenile Chairman) for their assistance in organising the camp, to Kieran Connolly for his photography and to everyone who made the camp possible.
This event goes from strength to strength each year and the running of this event would not be possible without the assistance of all. Sincere thanks

Questions & Answers
Session With
Kevin Mc Mahon
Profile: Kevin Mc Mahon, John Mitchel’s Referee
Tralee GAA Board Member
John Mitchel’s Minor player from/to: 1976-1979
Player Position: Right Corner Back
(Q): Which player/club member would you have looked up to as a player?
(A): “Sylvie Mason was the person many of us looked up to. He was a great organiser and great with young people. Sylvie gave a lot of his time to Juvenile football in the club and to the youth of the community. The club hosts an annual tournament named in his honour”.
(Q): For you what is your greatest accomplishment as a player or club member?
(A): “I am a member of the organising committee for the annual U8 & U10 boys club Blitz.
The tournament now in its fourteenth year and has gone from strength to strength. It’s a great sense of accomplishment to see it going so well each year. This year will see more than twenty teams taking part and sixty one games played in the one day event. Great credit is due to all the people involved for their effort in making it a great success each year”.
(Q): What other sport(s) have you been involved in?
(A): “I played basketball at under age level.
Gaelic football was the only sport I had any real interest in playing”.
(Q): What has been your greatest disappointment as a player/club member?
(A): “I have to say it was the defeat in the Senior County final in 1989. It was hard to take at the time and it is still a talking point within the Club”.
(Q): If you could change a rule(s) in Gaelic football what would you change?
(A): “I would re-introduce the sin-bin 10 minute rule. This would solve a lot of problems on the pitch. I believe it would restore discipline among players.
I would also introduce a compulsory course at club level for both players and management teams on the rules of the game”.
(Q): What is unique about your sport?
(A): “Gaelic football and GAA sports have a great community spirit. It is a lot cheaper financially for parents and players alike to be involved with a GAA club than many other sports”.
(Q) What are the most difficult challenges that referees face?
(A) “The lack of discipline on the side-line is increasing especially at under age level. The onus should be on the clubs to deal with this matter and in fairness many have strict codes of conduct. The various County Boards should also impose the necessary measures to stamp out this behaviour”.
(Q): What is satisfying about Gaelic football to you?
(A): “The friendships you make from when you first join at a young age remain with you for life. It is satisfying to see people enjoying the game and getting behind their team. We have great support for our teams at all levels in the club”.
(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A): “At present we’re in great shape we have great facilities. Going forward the future looks great we have great people at the club. Our future success will depend upon the numbers of new players that join each year.
At present we have good numbers at juvenile level in the club. This needs to be sustained and even improved on in the coming years”.
