SENIOR LADIES

Our senior ladies played Ballymac today in the county championship junior B semifinal in Ballymac, Mitchels having suffered a nine point defeat earlier in the competition entered the game as underdogs but the large crowd were treated to fantastic game of football which ebbed and flowed for the 60 plus minutes. Ballymac opened the scoring with 3 points on the trot before Mitchels settled with a free from Rachel and a point from Ava before we levelled 3 points each, with Mitchels Anna and Ashleigh taking control at the back and Sarah and Leona working hard at midfield fitted free from Rachel and Diana saw us go in at half time down a point with all to play for 0-5 to 0-6.

The second half opened at whirlwind fashion with both sides trading points before Ballymac hit for goal after the ball came off post. Mitchels didn’t panic and with Kayleigh solid in goals. Erica, Lauren, Carrie Shannon and Tanya defending vigorously we built through the lines to put Ava in for a goal after good approach work from Linda Rachel and Diana. The pace was frantic with no quarter given or taken. Mitchels continued to press and after a foul on Ava we were rewarded a penalty which Ava dispatched to the net score now Mitchels 2-5 Ballymac 1-7.Both defences were giving very little away so every ball was hard won entering the last 10 minutes Ballymac struck for a second goal to go 2 points up but our team rallied again and with Ellie and Eabha making there senior debut and a huge block from an Emma shot resulting in a long stoppage on play both teams continued to press Ballymac hit another point to go 3 up but in fairness Mitchels kept going and 2 further frees from Rachel reduced the score to the minimum margin to lose out by a point. Our girls gave a whole hearted display with a never say die attitude and can be very proud they didn’t leave the jersey down. Hard luck ladies in a fiercely contested game which the large support on edge until the final whistle. Best of luck to Ballymac in the Final ,
