It was a very high scoring game which saw our Seniors come out victors with the final score of John Mitchels 6-17 An Daingean 4-06. Well done to all players coaches and mentors. Senior Ladies

Donal Curtin Cup Round 4.

John Mitchels  0-08  Annascaul/Castlegregory  1-11.

John Mitchels continued their Donal Curtin Cup campaign with a home defeat in a very competitive encounter to Annascaul Castlegregory last Sunday Eabha Lyne opened the scoring with a point for the visitors before Rachel Kilgallen levelled matters from a free after 8 minutes. Rachel added a second free two minutes later to put John Mitchels in front.

Lauren Goodwin was then adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area and picked herself up to blast the resultant penalty past Kayleigh Collins in the John Mitchels goal.  Finola Casey then pushed the visitors further ahead with a well taken point from play before Rachel Kilgallen added her third pointed free just before half time to leave the half time score John Mitchels 0-03 Annascaul/Castlegregory 1-02.

Two early points from Finola Casey and one from Eabha Lyne pushed the visitors 5 clear before a Rachel Kilgallen free and a point from play by Lily Parker reduced the arrears to a goal.

Two points from Eabha Lyne, one from a free and a point each from Siobhan Goodwin and Orlagh Clifford eased Annascaul/Castlegregory into a 7-point lead but John Mitchels stuck to their task and 2 further pointed frees from Rachel Kilgallen and an Ava Buckley point from play reduced the lead to 4 points with 5 minutes remaining.

The visitors weren’t to be denied, however, and points from Brenna O’Neill and the impressive Finola Casey saw Annascaul/Castlegregory run out winners by 1-11 to 0-8.Despite the defeat this was a very encouraging display by the John Mitchels Ladies.  Apart from anything else, it is very encouraging that we had 20 players available for the game.

As well as all the players mentioned above, Tanya O Connor was very dominant in the art of blocking while Lorna Moriarty on her return to action can be very happy with her performance.  Julie Foley, Shannon Martin, Ashleigh Murphy and Aoife O’Brien were their usual dependable selves in defence.

Sarah Kilgallen and Simi Ogungsbesan more than shared parity in the midfield battle while in attack, Diana O Keeffe, Grace Hamilton and Emelia Brusnik won a lot of primary possession and always looked a threat.  Clara O Dowd, Ellen O’Brien and Ellie O’Rahilly all made telling impacts from the bench.

Training continues on Thursday night at 7.15 as we prepare to continue the remainder of our Donal Curtin Cup games, the County League and of course the County Championship.   As always, all new players are more than welcome to join the club, to have some fun, make new friends and who knows improve their mental and physical fitness and the skills of the game. The senior ladies would like to thank Foleys Spar who sponsored their new jerseys.

Under 14 Girls

A quiet week this week for John Mitchels u14 girls after the excitement of 2 County finals the previous weekend.

It is fair to say that the club and player, coaches and parents got a huge boost after winning both games. In particular the second game was a tense affair, going to extra time and credit must go to both our opponents, Dr Crokes and St Pats for two well contested games on the day.

After the finals, the player, parents and coaches ducked out of the rain and went upstairs to the meeting room for presentation of medals to the Green and Gold teams.

Great credit is due to the parents who helped out with the food, and preparations, and particularly to James O’Dowd for sponsoring pizzas for the teams after the game. It was a lovely finish to a terrific day.

The players got a well-deserved break during the week, but the Green team were on call again on Thursday when they hosted Castleisland Desmonds in a challenge game.

It was a tough task against a very strong team, but our girls gave a good account of themselves and the lessons learned will surely stand to the team during the season. Many thanks to Desmonds for travelling and to George O’Donnell for refereeing the game.

Under 16 girls

U9 BOYS WHO PLAYED NA GAEIL IN GO GAMES ON SUNDAY MORNING.

Under 9 boys

John Mitchels & @nagaeilgaa U9 Boys played some fantastic football on Sunday Morning last in John Mitchels. Both sides had a great turnout which meant more team’s & most importantly every player getting involved & getting plenty of ball!!

Our thanks to @nagaeilgaa for being well organized & their teams playing great football & we look forward to a return visit in the near future.

John Mitchels U9 Boys training continues every Sunday Morning from 10.15am All Newcomers Welcome.

Under 11 boys

Our U11 Boys had the first game of Phase 2 of our County Go Games last Thursday. We played Laune Rangers at home under the glorious sunshine and what an evening of football we got. Our lads worked especially hard and supported their teammates with some hard running off the ball. We have worked hard on the core skills of the game and it really showed tonight as we passed the ball when it should have been passed and we took some fantastic scores. We would like to thank Laune Rangers for a very sporting game.

Under 13 Boys

The U13a had a busy week with 4 games between both teams.

The Gold team lost in Division 9 on Wednesday evening to a much-improved Stacks team, from the one we faced earlier in the season, the Green team played afterwards and ran out comprehensive winners against Stacks, this secured a County semifinal with a game to spare, our semifinal opponents are still unknown at the time of writing,

The boys  played the final group game on Friday night against Legion, with the result set to determine first and second in our group, although the result wouldn’t matter to progression it would determine if we meet the form team in the other group.

The boys kicked some great scores,  lin the first half and we came in with a 12-point lead at the break, Legion turned it on in the second half and narrowed the margin to 2, the defence came alive and shut up shop and the forwards sprung to life again pushing the margin out to 6 before the final whistle.

Our Gold team went out on Sunday evening on a lovely pitch in Legion played in glorious weather, we were able to call on some of our U11 boys to bolster the squad knowing a win would send the boys into a county semifinal in division 9 which is the highest league they could enter.

The game was very even up to half time, with the scores 1:6 apiece going into the break. Legion pulled away in the second half and we had no answer, we battled hard to the end but just couldn’t close the gap. Final score 3:16 to 1:13 defeat.
