MitchelsSENIORS

Mitchels played their last round of their Division 2 season against St Mary’s in Caherciveen last Sunday. A win or draw for Mitchels would have ensured Division 1 status for next season.
This was always going to be a difficult game considering St Mary’s are the newly crowned Munster Intermediate Champions. It was a perfect day for football and the pitch was in good condition considering the heavy rainfall over the previous 36 hours thanks to Hurricane Desmond.

St Mary’s opened the score and were up 3 points before James Duggan scored Mitchels first point. St Mary’s scored a further 2 points but Mitchels followed with 2 points from converted frees from James Duggan and Niall Sheehy. St Mary’s scored a crucial goal just before half time leaving the half time score St Mary’s 1-05, Mitchels 0-03.
Mitchels started well in the 2nd half with James Duggan scoring 2 points, one from play and a converted free. St Mary’s scored a further point from play but this was followed by a further 2 points from Niall Sheehy. Both teams traded scores and were level as full-time approached. To the disappointment of the Mitchels, St Mary’s scored one last point from a free resulting in St Mary’s winning the match by a point.

Mitchels played their hearts out in the 2nd half and brought the game back to level terms and were very disappointed not to get a draw out of the game. This result now means that Mitchels are in a four way play off with Rathmore, Spa and St Mary’s with the overall winner getting promotion to Division 1.
Final score St Mary’s 1-10 John Mitchels 0-12
