SENIOR TEAM – JOHN MITCHELS v RATHMORE (AWAY)
We played Rathmore in Finuge on Sunday January 10th. This game was a play off for Division 1. This was going to be a difficult encounter for Mitchels as Rathmore had just won back to back O’Donoghue Cup Finals before Christmas. The game was played in good conditions dry and cold with a very slight breeze.
Mitchels wasted a few early chances and Rathmore were first on the score board. Mitchels then scored two points one from play and one from a free by Niall Sheehy. Rathmore then converted a free to level the game. George Bastible then scored a point from play followed by 3 Points from Rathmore, two frees and one from play. Mitchels then scored a point from play with a Shane O’Connor effort followed by a Rathmore point.
Nearing the end of the first half James Duggans free dropped into the danger area and Alan O’Donoghue got a deflection on it to score a great goal. Rathmore then responsded quickly with a point from play giving a half-time score John Mitchels 1-04. Rathmore 0-07.
Rathmore opened the score with a point from play on the third minute of play. Mitchels scored a point from a Cian Sheridan effort and this was followed by two points from frees by Rathmore. Both teams were giving it their all when Ciaran Deane was fouled in the square resulting in a penalty.
Unfortunately the penalty was missed but it was Mitchels who dug deep and scored three points in succession – one from play by Alan O’Donoghue followed by converted frees by Shane O’Connor and Niall Sheehy. With Mitchels up a point and nearing the end Rathmore sneaked a point from play at the death drawing the game resulting in the game going to extra time.
In the first half half of extra time there was no score as both teams defended well. In the second half of extra time Rathmore converted a point from a free in the third minute of play. Just near the end of play Shane O’Connor sent a high ball into the danger area and with George Bastible in the right play at the right time deflected the ball into the Rathmore net resulting in a great victory for John Mitchels.
They now go on to play Spa next weekend to decide which team will go up to Division 1. Great credit must be given to both teams to serve up such an exciting game to the large attendance who were entertained right up to the last kick of the game.
