Castlegregory GC President, Sean Spillane, on right, presents John Dillane with the President’s Cup after winning the competition.

AT THE second time of asking Club President Sean Spillane got Apollo, the God of Sunlight, to shine his rays over Stradbally on Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday.

He was a bit slow off the mark on Saturday morning and some competitors had to make do with Notus, the God of Wet and Stormy South Wind, while trying to put a good score together.

Conditions favoured those on Sunday and it was no surprise that 42 pts was posted prior to lunch by John Dillane. Despite the best efforts of the chasing pack, John’s score was four points ahead of second place, King of the Lefties, Joe Mulcahy.

Third, fourth and fifth – Colin O’Sullivan, George Nash and Joe Parker – each had 37 pts, with a lost ball on the 18th proving costly for the former Austin Stacks goalkeeper, Joe.

Barry Martin’s 21pts and Tommy King’s 24pts won the front and back nine respectively. Chairman of Management, Tom Moriarty, won nearest the pin.

Presentation of prizes took place in Spillane’s Bar and Restaurant, Maharees, later that night. President Sean welcomed one and all and thanked those who had played over the two weekends.

Sincere thanks to sponsors Micheal Lynch, Spar Castlegregory, Con and Dan O’Connor, IMG Financial Solutions, Mike Fitzgerald Jnr and James Costelloe of Forest Produce.

Also to our genial hosts on the night Mike, Marilyn and Rose Spillane for their hospitality.

Having given three years to the club as President, we thank him for the time, effort and commitment and know that we can call on his support in the years ahead.

The man Sean entrusted with donning the President’s mantle is former club captain, Eddie Hanafin. Eddie is another club stalwart, having served the club in a number of positions and we wish him all the best when he takes office.
