IT was awards night for the Kerry District League at the Kingdom Greyhound Track on Friday with two special guests.

Legendary footballer and pundit, John Giles, presented trophies to representatives of winning cup teams in Kerry competitions, while Chief Executive of the FAI, John Delaney, who is no stranger to Tralee, was also on hand to congratulate Kerry soccer players on a great season.

Tralee clubs who received awards on the night were Mitches Avenue, Tralee Dynamos and St Brendan’s Park,.

John Giles, had his honeymoon in Kerry and has been to visit the county numerous times down the years.

“Football in Kerry is coming on great, I was here four years ago and somebody told me there were more people playing soccer than Gaelic and I couldn’t believe it,” said the Leeds legend.

“Eventually a player from the county will be capped with Ireland, with so many players earning caps from non-traditional soccer counties, Kerry’s time will come,” said Giles.

John Delaney formed Tralee Celtic while he was living and working in the town in the 90’s. A League of Ireland club for the county has been spoken about in the past, is this still on the table?

“It’s something I’d like to see at some stage,” said John Delaney.

“If it is to happen it should be done under a Kerry banner as opposed to one club, the club structure reflects a particular area, be it Tralee, Killarney or Listowel. A county team would unite a greater support like it does in Gaelic,” said Delaney.

In addition to the trophy presentations, the night was also a fundraiser for the Kerry District League.
