Football returns:

The opening game in the Tralee town league took place on Sunday when John Mitchels were the visitors to Strand Road.

As the squad only recently returned to training and with many of the seasoned brigade taking a break, we had only a handful of starters from last year’s senior squad; this was to take nothing from the Mitchels who settled quickly and registered two goals inside the first five minutes.

They proceeded to dominate exchanges despite the best efforts of Tom Hoare and Chucky and were full value for their half time lead of 2-07 to 0-04.

We improved considerably in the 2nd half, outshooting our opponents by 0-08 to 1-02 , before falling short at the full time whistle on a scoreline of 3-09 to 0-12.

We travel to Ardfert next Sunday 18th to take on the locals who had a big win over St Pats on Saturday – the game throws in @ 12 noon.

Sigerson/Trench Cups:

The final of the Sigerson Cup, the blue riband of 3rd level colleges takes place this coming Wednesday night in Austin Stack Park where throw-in is @ 7.30 pm.

The contestants are Ulster University and UCD and with both sides  having a number of inter-county stars on display it promises to be a great encounter.

On Tuesday, the semi finals of the Trench Cup take place when MTU Tralee take on MIC Limerick @ 3 pm in the college campus; we have a number  of players involved in the MTU side most notably Darragh O’Connor, Conor O’Sullivan and Sam McCarthy.

If MTU are successful in their semi final they will take on the winners of DKIT/TUS Midwest in the final on Wednesday 14th @ 4.30 pm in the MTU Campus.

Lotto:

This week’s jackpot is for a grand prize of €10,900 – tickets from the usual outlets or online @ https://play.clubforce.com/play_newa.asp?ll_id=328#Anchor

Corn Uí Mhuirí:

Mercy Mounthawk claimed their first ever Corn Uí Mhuirí title when beating Tralee CBS in a thrilling final on Saturday in Austin Stack Park.

It was a game worthy of this historic occasion which saw Mounthawk lead at the break by five points, 0-09 to 0-04 having played with the assistance of the breeze in the first half.

The second half saw “ The Green “ bring the game to their opponents and as the game entered its final minutes there was only 3 points between the sides 0-12 to 0-09; the Green were then awarded a penalty which saw Austin Stack clubmates facing each other as Ronan Carroll stepped up to take the kick opposed by his colleague Michael Tansley – Ronan found the bottom corner but this proved to be their last score as Mounthawk took over and in a nervy finish found their range to rattle off 3 points without reply.

It was a day of mixed emotions for our clubmates as Tomás Kennedy, Jake Hoare, Breandán Meehan and Odhran Kerins were on the victorious side but Jake Foley, Cody O’Shea and mentor Alan O’Sullivan were on the losing side.

For Jake, it was a particularly difficult afternoon as he sat out the game on the bench due to an injury – as captain of the side it must have been a very difficult day for him.

We wish Jake a speedy recovery and wish Mounthawk all the best in their quest for All Ireland honours – they will take on Naas CBS in two weeks time.

Great energy at training by this age group last Saturday morning. Well done to everyone!

Congratulations to Lexi, Sophie and Taylor Kate on their selection as part of the U14 Kerry Ladies football panel for 2024. All your hard work and dedication has paid off.

Next Saturday, February 17th the teams will play Mayo teams in Dr. Crokes at 12p.m.  Enjoy and best of luck Ladies!

U16 GIRLS

This week the U16 girls continued with training in CBS The Green astro on Tuesday,  working on ball retention and ball handling drills and finishing with drills working on fitness and speed work.

As we are coming to the end of our pre-season, our girls upped their work in the gym working on the core and stability program from Shane McElligot who is giving us as much time as he can and is much appreciated.

We finished our week with a 5k run on the marina to the lock gates and back with a small work out at the lock gates to finish the week strong.

We had mixed numbers this week as our older girls hit the books for the mocks we wish the  best of luck to Fiadh, Donna, Taylor, Caoileann, Bianka, Aoibheann, Saoirse, Jocelyn and Naoise and on Friday we had to make an exception as a very important code disco was on so numbers were down a bit in the gym!!

We also had a happy birthday to our main lady on the management team,  Rachel. Her age is to be kept a secret….!

If anyone is thinking about a move or a comeback our gates are always open –  please contact our club through social media or any way possible and we’ll do what we can.

Well done to Kerins O’ Rahillys Aoibheann McCarthy and Saoirse O’ Connor MacCarthy ( captain) who were part of the Kerry team who defeated Limerick last Sunday in round 1 of the Munster U16B Championship , Sharon O’ Keeffe Tournament.

MINORS

Well done to the Kerry minors who defeated Limerick in round 1 of the MLGFA  Minor Championship and to our club player Kelly Fitzgerald. Aoibhín O’ Connor MacCarthy is also on the panel but is away at present with school so we’re all looking forward to also seeing Aoibhín in action too.
