TRALEE Tidy Towns is hosting a free ‘Reducing your Food Waste and Composting’ workshop on this Tuesday, July 11 from 7pm to 9pm in the Moyderwell allotments on Dean’s Lane.

The workshop will cover tips and suggestions for how to limit your food waste in your home and how to make and maintain your own organic compost.

This workshop will be delivered by Master Composters Clem and Bernard O’Keeffe. They developed their skills by completing a Master Composting Course with Stop Food Waste Ireland and several online Organic Horticultural courses hosted by the National Organic Training Skillnet (NOTS) and given by legendary polytunnel expert Klaus Laitenberger.

Clem said; “There are numerous possibilities for making compost and during this workshop we’ll be highlighting the uses and benefits of making your own organic compost.”

Globally, food loss and waste contribute to 8-10 % of greenhouse gas emissions and the average Irish home wastes around €700 of food per year.

Anne-Marie Fuller of Tralee Tidy Towns said; “reducing your food waste and composting is a win win for your pocket and the planet. It saves you money on the cost of wasted food and buying compost for your garden. It helps reduce landfill emissions from food and garden waste and instead composting helps store carbon and improve soil health.”

“As well as that, commercially available composts often contain peat from our bogs so making your own compost at home helps protect our bogs which are very good at storing carbon and are rich natural habitats.”

Brendan O’ Brien Chairperson of Tralee Tidy Towns said; “We’re grateful to Clem and Bernard for collaborating with Tralee Tidy Towns to deliver this course and to the National Tidy Towns and Department of Rural Community Development for providing the funding to allow us offer this course for free to the community.

“We’re also really grateful to Peter Colleran and the team at Moyderwell Allotments for their support providing the venue for this workshop. The Moyderwell allotments are a hidden gem in the town, and this is a great opportunity for the wider community learn about composting in this amazing community space.”
