LISTELLICK national school’s  150th anniversary celebrations kicked off in earnest on Friday morning with a balloon releasing ceremony and the presentation of a jersey by former pupil and ex-Irish rugby international, Donal Spring.

Each of the balloons released signified a year where ‘the academy on the hill’ provided education for children in Listellick.

Donal Spring presented the school with his first senior test match jersey he wore for Ireland as a memento to show his appreciation.

“I was always very proud I went to school in Listellick, so it’s nice to give something back,”  said Donal.

“It’s a lovely feeling coming back here, I’ve very fond memories of this place. I think the school gave me a great start in life, when they told me the 150th anniversary was coming up, I thought it would be a nice thing to do,” said Donal.

In addition to releasing the balloons, the school also used the day to fly it’s environmental green flag which was awarded to the school last May by An Taisce.

Later on Friday evening a book will be launched to commemorate the anniversary at St Brendan’s Church Pastoral Centre following a special Mass at 7pm in the church.

The Listellick 150 book, which was compiled by a committee led by former principal Micheál O Cinnéide, traces the history of the school down through the years.

There was the added treat as well for the kids with the arrival of an ice cream truck specially hired for the occasion.

“It’s a lovely school, the community, the parents, the children, it’s a pleasure to be principal” said, Annette Dineen, Principal of Listellick National School.
