A LOCAL Garda is encouraging the public to take part in a special challenge in aid of the Asthma Society.

In recognition of 50 years of life-changing work in Ireland, the Asthma Society has launched their ‘2023 Take a Breath Challenge’.

Taking place at the end of September, the challenge invites participants to hike (or ramble) to raise much-needed funds towards the organisation’s mission: to stop asthma deaths in Ireland.

Leanne Haussmann, a 27-year-old asthma patient, is a Garda based in Tralee and is also an Ambassador for the Glendalough Challenge.

She said; “As someone who has experienced the challenges of asthma firsthand, I am looking forward to leading this challenge on behalf of the Asthma Society and to raising awareness of the benefits of exercise on asthma control. The “Take a Breath Challenge” is more than just a hike or a walk; it’s a chance to come together, show support, and create a positive impact. Too many families across the country have lost their loved ones. I’m doing this because I know the difference the Asthma Society has made in my life. I know my hike could help save lives.”

On Saturday, September 30th, the Asthma Society will be hosting a guided overnight Glendalough hike in Wicklow, but if you can’t make the Glendalough hike you can still get involved the challenge.

You can undertake a scenic walk or hike during the weekend of September 30th with family or friends and share your ‘Take A Breath’ moment online using the hashtag #TakeABreath to be in with a chance to win a prize.
