Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship: Quarter-Final Result/Match Report
Milltown/Castlemaine’s Senior side travelled to Cromane last weekend for the Preliminary Round (Quarter-Final) of the Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship.
The hosts made a brighter start with some lovely scores from Sean O’Sullivan (two frees into the breeze) and Darragh McKeefry (one from play, and one from a mark) seeing Cromane open up a 0-4 to 0-1 inside ten minutes.

When Donnchadh Walsh rounded goalkeeper Cormac Leane to raise a green flag in the 15th minute Cromane had a 5-point lead at 1-4 to 0-2 with Eanna O’Connor (free) and Cathal Moriarty from play keeping us in touch.
Our lads dug in and showed great resilience after a sluggish opening quarter to tag on the last four points of the half through Eanna O’Connor (1 free, 1 from play), Cathal Moriarty and Pa Wren to trail by just one at the break at 1-4 to 0-06.
Despite the hosts leading at the interval and having the strong wind at their back for the second half, they were unable to assert themselves in the opening quarter with Milltown/Castlemaine now well and truly in the ascendancy. Milltown/Castlemaine hit the first three points of the second half, two from substitute Jonathan O’Sullivan and one from Cathal Moriarty to hit the front for just the second time all day at 0-9 to 1-4.
A very well taken long-range free from Darren Houlihan cut the gap back to the bare minimum at 0-9 to 1-5 but this was the home side’s first score in twenty-five minutes, showcasing the firm grip Milltown/Castlemaine had taken of the game. When a fortuitous Pa Wren pointed effort dropped under the crossbar it pushed the away sides lead out to four at 1-9 to 1-5 as we approached the final quarter of the contest.
Milltown/Castlemaine controlled the latter stages with points from Gavin Horan, Eanna O’Connor, Kieran O’Carroll and substitute Cian O’Connor giving our lads a seven point victory and a place in the Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship Semi-Final where we will now meet Laune Rangers (away) in two weeks time. Time and date are to be confirmed at a Mid Kerry Board meeting this week.
