Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 1, Round 3 Result
Milltown/Castlemaine 2-11 (17)
Kerins O’Rahillys 1-14 (17)

Venue: Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown

Referee: Brian Fleming (Currow)

The Paddy Burke Memorial Park in Milltown was the scene for the Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 1, Round 3 clash on Saturday evening as Milltown/Castlemaine hosted Kerins O’Rahillys.

The visitors came into the contest on the back of a defeat in Round 1 against Castleisland Desmonds but responded well to take victory in Round 2 against Ballymacelligott.

Milltown/Castlemaine, on the other hand, took a share of the spoils in Round 1 as they drew with Dingle and backed that up with a slender one point victory against Castleisland Desmonds in Round 2 so a tight affair was expected again at the weekend.

The hosts got off to the perfect start inside the opening minutes of the game as some quick thinking from Eanna O’Connor from a short free released Cathal Moriarty who fed Jonathan O’Sullivan and O’Sullivan made no mistake as he rounded Kerins O’Rahillys goalkeeper Shane Foley before burying to the back of the net, 1-0 to 0-0.

The visitors didn’t panic however and worked their way back from the worst possible start as Darragh O’Connor (free) and Gearoid Dillane with a pointed effort from play had the score at 1-0 to 0-2 after ten minutes.

Jonathan O’Sullivan and Sean Hogan then landed two fine points from open play to stretch the lead back out to three at 1-2 to 0-2 but the away side cut the deficit again as Conor Hayes (free) and Gearoid Dillane with a fisted effort had the bare minimum between the sides at 1-2 to 0-4 at the midway point of the half.

Eanna O’Connor (free) and Darragh O’Connor (free) exchanged points to keep little between the teams by the 20th minute.

Kerins O’Rahillys finished the half the stronger and despite trailing for much of the first half, they ended up carrying a suprise one point lead into the half-time break as Gearoid Dillane with his third point of the evening and another Darragh O’Connor close range free after Conor Hayes was fouled seen the visitors lead 0-7 to 1-3 at the interval.

Milltown/Castlemaine made the brighter start to the second half and whilst there was an early exchange of points from Jonathan O’Sullivan and Darragh O’Connor (free) for either side, it was the home side who moved firmly into the ascendancy as pointed efforts from Eanna O’Connor, Jerome Flynn and David Roche plus an opportunistic goal from Jerome Flynn after a long ball into the heart of the Kerins O’Rahillys defence was not dealt with seen Milltown/Castlemaine establish a 2-7 to 0-8 lead by the 45th minute.

Kerins O’Rahillys midfielder Diarmuid O’Sullivan stemmed the tide momentarily with a pointed free off the ground but the in-form Flynn responded within minutes to keep the home side’s lead at five points, 2-8 to 0-9.

The visitors’ big match experience showed in the final quarter however as they whittled the lead down and never panicked with former Kerry star Barry John Keane leading the way and tagging on two hugely important points from play as the game entered the final quarter.

In-between his two scores, a penalty was also awarded after Conor Hayes was adjudged to have been brought to ground inside the Milltown/Castlemaine square.

Up stepped centre-back Ryan Carroll and he made no mistake, dispatching the ball to the right corner of the net and making it a one point game at 2-08 to 1-10.

The game opened up in the closing stages as both sides went for the jugular and it turned into an end-to-end pulsating encounter.

Milltown/Castlemaine had the perfect response to the goal concession when Eanna O’Connor landed a beauty of a point from play but this was replied to in-kind as Sean Walsh came down the other end and raised a white flag to keep it a one-point match.

Eanna O’Connor tagged on the home sides final two scores of the evening, one from a free 30 metres out off his hand and the other a ’45’ after a Sean Hogan pointed effort was turned behind by a Rahillys defender and it looked as if the home side would eke out a narrow victory but the visitors weren’t giving up and late points from Barry John Keane, TJ Heaphy and an injury time fisted point from another former Kerry star in Tommy Walsh after a free dropped short seen the two sides take a share of the spoils as there was nothing to separate either team on a score of 2-11 to 1-14.

Well done to the players and management on maintaining their unbeaten start to life back in Division 1 after the opening three rounds of the County League. They will travel to Kilcummin for Round 4 in less than two weeks time.

Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 6, Round 3 Result
Milltown/Castlemaine ‘B’ 0-05 (5)
Valentia 3-16 (25)

Venue: Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown

Hard luck to our Senior ‘B’ side and management who welcomed a strong Valentia Young Islanders side on Good Friday to Milltown but were defeated.

The away side led 1-6 to 0-3 at the half time interval after a tight opening half but in the second half they pulled away and ran out deserving winners.
