Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 1, Round 11 Result

Milltown/Castlemaine 1-09
Dr. Crokes 0-12

Venue: Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown

Our Senior ‘A’ side welcomed Dr. Crokes to the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown last Sunday afternoon for the penultimate round of the 2023 Credit Union County Senior Football League.

There was plenty riding on the result of this and many other Division 1 fixtures at the weekend and many permutations at the bottom and top of the table depending on other results.

Milltown/Castlemaine were fastest out of the blocks as early scores from Gavin Horan, Eanna O’Connor and Sean Hogan had us 0-3 to 0-0 ahead after a blistering opening spell. Dr. Crokes were back on level terms within a matter of minutes however and showed their class in doing so as scores from Liam Randles, Brendan Falvey and Billy Courtney made it 0-3 apiece.

Daithi Casey knocked over the visitors last three points of the half as Jonathan O’Sullivan and Eanna O’Connor registered two for Milltown/Castlemaine and it was the Killarney side who retired to the half-time interval with a narrow lead at 0-6 to 0-5.

The second half followed a similar enough pattern although Dr. Crokes did step it up for a period and showed why they were top of the table coming into the contest.

They kicked the opening point of the half as Daithi Casey added his fourth point in succession to leave it 0-7 to 0-5 and they also led 0-8 to 0-7 after 45 minutes with Eanna O’Connor and Jonathan O’Sullivan keeping us in touch.

We took the lead in the next few minutes as points from Eanna O’Connor and Jerome Flynn edged us ahead at 0-9 to 0-8 in front of a raucous home crowd.

The visitors responded as one would expect though and kicked the next three points with that man again Daithi Casey, Mikey Casey and Kieran O’Leary leaving the Killarney men with a two point advantage at 0-11 to 0-9 as we headed down the final stretch.

Milltown/Castlemaine rose again however and after Sean Hogan made a superb catch near the Crokes goal, he was hauled to the ground and referee Eamonn Moran had no choice but to award a penalty which was expertly dispatched underneath the Crokes goalkeeper by who else but Eanna O’Connor to give us the lead once more by the narrowest of margins at 1-09 to 0-11 as the clock headed towards injury time.

The visitors would have the final say however when Billy Courtney who had a fine game around the middle third, landed a long range point from all of 45 metres to leave the sides level at 1-09 to 0-12 at the final whistle.

On the balance of play one would have to say it was the fairest result given the efforts of both teams.

Well done to the Milltown/Castlemaine Senior ‘A’ team and management who secured Division 1 football for the club again next season after a very creditable return of 11 points from eleven rounds.

This was the teams 8th result from 11 games (5 draws, 3 wins and 3 losses) which shows the very competitive nature of top division football. Eyes will now inevitably turn to the Intermediate Club Football Championship which will take place in August.

We are grouped with Gneeveguilla, Glenbeigh/Glencar and Beaufort in the initial stages and dates and times are to be confirmed for these matches in the coming weeks.

A word of congratulations to Dr. Crokes also who were crowned Division 1 Champions on Sunday after finishing 1st place on 17 points.

Kerry GAA Development Squads: U14, U15 and U16 Club Representation
Milltown/Castlemaine GAA were very well represented in the Green and Gold of Kerry last weekend. Charlie Griffin was with the Kerry South U15s as they took on Galway North in Tuam Stadium, our own Cathal Moriarty is involved in the management.

Meanwhile at Kerry South U16s level the club was represented by Michael Lynch, James Dempsey and Sean Griffin on Sunday as they took on Galway in Currans, Ian Twiss is involved in the management team here.
