Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 1, Round 4 Result and Match Report and Round 5 Fixture

Milltown/Castlemaine’s Senior ‘A’ side travelled to Strand Road, Tralee on Sunday afternoon to take on Kerins O’Rahillys in Division 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League.

Both sides came into the contest searching for their first win of the competition with the hosts losing their first three matches whilst Milltown/Castlemaine fared slightly better with one draw and two defeats.

Kerins O’Rahillys started much the brighter of the two teams and had a 0-4 to 0-0 lead built up by the 10th minute thanks to scores from Tom Hoare, Darragh O’Connor and Daniel Bowler.

Eanna O’Connor finally managed to get Milltown/Castlemaine off the mark after 12 minutes with a free from an acute angle but this was cancelled out moments later when Kerry U20 footballer, Darragh O’Connor kicked his third point to leave it 0-5 to 0-1 after 15 minutes.

The turning point in this game, however, was undoubtedly what occurred next as Jake Foley, playing midfield for the home side was shown a straight red card after catching David Roche high in the tackle.

Centre-Forward Shane McElligott also left the play for O’Rahillys through what appeared to be an ankle injury so all of a sudden they were down two key players in central positions and the momentum shifted to the visitors.

Pa Wren and Darragh O’Connor exchanged points from play to leave Rahillys ahead 0-6 to 0-2 after 20 minutes but that would be the hosts final score for the remainder of the half as Milltown/Castlemaine hit 2-1 without reply before the break with the goals coming from Eanna O’Connor and Gavin Horan and O’Connor raising a white flag also to leave the half-time score 2-3 to 0-6.

Kerins O’Rahillys through an in-form Darragh O’Connor up front, notched the opening point of the second half to take his tally to five for the afternoon and then Eanna O’Connor and Barry John Keane exchanged points from play to leave it 2-4 to 0-8 after 37 minutes.

Milltown/Castlemaine put their foot on the gas however for the next five minutes with another 2-1 unanswered with the goals coming from Brendan Casey and Jerome Flynn and Pa Wren notching his second score of the afternoon from full-back.

The away side had now opened up a commanding 4-5 to 0-8 lead by the 43rd minute and it looked to be game over at Strand Road.

To the home sides great credit, they rallied for the remainder of the contest and buoyed by a black card being shown to Milltown/Castlemaine’s David Roche, it was 14 on 14 for the next ten minutes.

The hosts made inroads during this spell as the visitors retreated with O’Rahillys scoring 1-3 without response. Daniel Bowler with his second of the day and a fisted point from substitute Conor Hayes had the lead cut to 4-05 to 0-10 by the 50th minute and a penalty kick was awarded in the 52nd minute which was dispatched to the corner of Cormac Leane’s net despite his best efforts to almost keep it out.

Than man again, Darragh O’Connor landed his sixth and final point of the game in the 59th minute and suddenly it was game on as we headed for injury time with lead cut from 9 to 3 points in the space of fifteen minutes, Milltown/Castlemaine now leading 4-05 to 1-11.

Kerins O’Rahillys threw the kitchen sink at the away side in injury time but the only scores that materialised in a six minute period were an exchange from Eanna O’Connor and Conor Hayes at either end to leave the final score 4-06 to 1-12 in Milltown/Castlemaine’s favour.

Well done to the players and management who now have 1 win, 1 draw and 2 defeats from their opening four fixtures in Division 1.

Round 5 will take place on Sunday, April 27th when Milltown/Castlemaine host Killarney Legion at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park at 6:30pm. All support is welcome.

Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 6B, Round 4 Result and Round 5 Fixture

Milltown/Castlemaine’s Senior ‘B’ side were also on the road last weekend as they travelled to Foilmore to take on St. Michaels Foilmore ‘B’ in Division 6B of the Credit Union County Senior Football League. The lads put in a very workmanlike effort but unfortunately were on the losing side with the final score 2-10 to 0-10, the goals proving to be the difference on this occasion. Hard luck to the players and management.

Round 5 will take place on Sunday, April 28th when Milltown/Castlemaine travel away to take on John Mitchels ‘B’ at 4:00pm in Ballyseedy, Tralee. All support is welcome for the players and management.

Kellihers Toyota Central Region Division 3, Round 2 Result and Round 3 Fixture: Minors (U17s)

Milltown/Castlemaine’s Minor side (U17s) welcomed St Michaels Foilmore/Skellig Rangers to the Paddy Burke Memorial Park on Monday evening for Round 2 of the Kellihers Toyota Central Region and in what was a thoroughly entertaining game of football in near perfect conditions, nothing could separate the sides in what can only be described as a goalfest! The final score was Milltown/Castlemaine 7-09 St Michaels Foilmore/Skellig Rangers 6-12. This makes it 1 win and 1 draw from the opening two rounds for the players and management.

Round 3 will take place on Monday, April 29th when Milltown/Castlemaine are away to Ardfert St. Michaels Foilmore at 7:00pm. All support is welcome.

We would like to thank the parents for always supporting the boys, embracing the ‘Silent Sideline’ concept and bringing them to training and matches during the busy season.
We would also like to thank Firies Football, Hurling & Ladies Football Club for travelling and participating in such great games.

Senior Ladies: Donal Curtin Cup Round 2 Result

In conditions which are unfamiliar to us this year (sunshine ) we made the trip back west on Sunday to face Dingle in the second round of Dónal Curtin Cup to face a strong & established Dingle team.

The first 10 minutes were an even affair, both teams sounding the other out before Dingle made the breakthrough with a well taken point, this opened up Dingle to notch on a few more scores before our girls found their groove with Tina Galvin fresh off the back of last weeks heroics coming close a goal as it whispered  passed the post, and Tanya Joy relishing goals at the moment with another point blank save for the second week in a row as our defence came under pressure from a solid Dingle forward line.

In blistering heat we attacked the second half with more determination and ferocity notching up with 2 quick scores through Tina Galvin & Maeve O’ Connor, keeping Dingle to shooting from far out with some solid defence shown by Aileen Courtney, Nicola Kerins & Breda Moran.

Some valiant efforts by our midfielders Paige O’ Connor & Evelyn Twiss, Angela Griffin stepping up with some lovely ball into our forward line.

Missing a few players through injury we always knew our trip back west would be a difficult one but the girls gave it their all and again for a second week in a row left it all on the field.
Thank you to Dingle for hosting today’s match in beautiful conditions.

As always thank you to our coach Linus, supporters and families who came to support our senior ladies in what is their inaugural year of senior football.
Thank you to our sponsor South West Social

Milltown Bowling Club:

New Year, New hobby.
Want to try something new and fun then come along to Milltown Nagle Rice community centre and have a go at short mat bowls.
All you need is just a pair of comfortable shoes for two hours of gently rolling bowls along a 1.8 meter wide x 12 meter long mat.
A timber block is placed midway along the mat and the aim of the game is to roll a bowl along the mat, avoiding the block and touching a yellow ball called the “Jack” at the opposite end.
A wooden fender is placed at both ends to keep the bowls from rolling off the mat end.
Nearest bowl to the Jack after 9 ends scores, the more of your bowls closer than your opponent the more you score.
All training and guidance will be provided along with the use of club bowls to get you started.
Once you get going then we have league and cup competitions, friendly individual and group matches along with the opportunity to play other clubs within Kerry.
Sounds simple!!!
Well the only way to find out is to come along and have a go.
First night is free and it’s only a fiver then per night for two hours of fun and learning to play one of the fastest growing indoor sports for all age groups in Ireland.
Milltown bowls club looks forward to seeing you on Tuesday and Friday nights at 8pm.
